It wasn't really unofficial until Tomino himself decided to forget about it. I haven't read Hathaway's Flash, but it sounds like HF was written with Gaia Gear in mind, being written around the same time. The EF following a similar trajectory, a focus on immigration and the term "man-hunting."

I'd love to consider Gaia Gear official, for whatever that's worth in the Universal Century, but it's kinda hard to square Gaia Gear with Victory. Based on the radio drama, it's hard to imagine the Balkanization of F91, Crossbone, and Victory having occurred in Gaia Gear's history. Gaia Gear paints an EF that's grown weak due to uncontested power. At least, that's what I've gleaned from it so far.
Not an outright retcon, it's just a little weird. But I'd say Gaia Gear has more problems with Victory than it does with G-Saviour.
