It's amazing how many people seemed to have missed that. That's in episode 2, right after the Sachiel fight.
They also tend to miss Ritsuko flat out called the Eva an "artificial life form" when she's introducing it in episode 1 and act like the fact that the Eva isn't a normal robot is a huge reveal late in the series.

Escaflowne is my No. 3 mechfu. TV version, not gross blood-sucking bug movie version.
Looks cool enough, but it also transforms into a dragon-glider mode; no cockpit, you have to ride on it's back and control it using reins like a horse. It also has a sweet cape and a sword that grows larger like the Thundercats sword.
The bad guy Guymelefs from the show were pretty cool, too.
