Is A.Z overrated? It wasn't very good and then fizzled and most of /m/ and /a/ found it to be underwhelming.
Fwiw, Evol is better than A.Z though.
Evol is good.
It provides beautifully animated and choreographed fights that take full advantage of Aquarion's flexibility as a machine and the abilities of its pilots.
The love story between Mikono, Amata, Kagura and Zessica is the perfect mix of heartwarming and bittersweet. The reveal that Apollo was Pollon is a brilliant allegory, for what is more pure and innocent than the love of a dog? In distilling that naivete in Amata, we see Mikono meet the perfect companion to her own sweet and kindly nature.
The mysteries surrounding Mykage and the clear ever-present threat he offers as an antagonist leaves the audience spellbound and on the edge of their seats every time he's on screen, and the way he's defeated by Fudo provides a fine dramatic finish to his arc while thoroughly redeeming Fudo's character.
And on top of all that, its debut in SRW Z3 was nothing short of masterful. The only part that might be complained about is how they gave Mykage an obsession with making sure that green-haired girls could never be happy, which is just unfair.

I like EVOL too, including the ending. Yeah the twist was out there, but in the grand scheme of things it still kept the tone. The main reason the average person doesn't like it is because these days we're all about innovation and challenge traditions such as fairy tales which is what EVOL is trying to be. In fact the franchise itself is essentially all about storytelling.

I mean, Kawamori has been pretty nonsensical regarding Aquarion. He wants people to like Aquarion and wants to make the franchise popular, but he also doesn't want to erase the things people hated about EVOL and insists that it was good or something. He became a waifufag in the truest sense.
