At the 30th national sci-tech festival held in April last one particular exhibit was wood-plastic composite planks. One of the visitors said, “These look smart and strong. That light brown plank seems to be suitable for the living room.” Another one said, “Look at the yellow plank for the wall of the dining room. It feels cosy and is water resistant. It’ll be a favourite with housewives.” Hearing them many other people turned their eyes to the goods presented by the Korea Sangwon Trading Company.
The company has always maintained an important principle in developing and producing new things. It is to pay primary attention to the country’s actual condition and people’s needs in all consideration.
Two years ago the company decided to lay a new process for production of wood-plastic composite planks. At the time Kwon Thae Song who was in charge of the task said, “We must make goods quite different from the existing kind. This is not simply for our company’s popularity. Our company exists to produce the people’s favourite goods and render a help to the country’s economic development.” He asked the workers to put out new ideas for the project.
All of them rose as one to develop high-quality goods. In this course, they all agreed that the primary problem was to improve the goods’ water-resistant capacity.
Kim Yong Bok, an officer for technical affairs, knew by studying latest data and making repeated experiments that a clue of water resistance might be to denature the surface of the filler (sawdust). He verified the possibility in several research institutes and buckled down to the making together with technicians and workers.
On the other hand, Kwon produced an idea that would help further decrease the production cost. It was to increase the ratio of the cheap filler while maintaining the quality index. Though some opinions were raised about the fear that a higher ratio of the filler might weaken water resistance, most of the workers wanted the two ideas to be pushed ahead with simultaneously. They believed there is nothing impossible to a willing heart.
After months of painstaking researches and repeated experiments and analyses, the sci-tech problems were solved to prevent humidity by denaturing the filler’s surface. In addition, a reasonable ratio of combination of the filler, PVC and auxiliary additives was found out. At last the new kind of plank was developed, which is resistant to water, heat and decay. A gravitational water supply system was introduced in the moulding process after the workers’ ingenious idea, and a new sub-process was added in which the goods are cut as required by users. A year later the company cut the production cost of the planks by 20 per cent, while improving the impact stress and pressure intensities 1.5 times.
As the users’ demand for planks is steadily growing and becoming varied, the workers are making strenuous efforts to produce cheaper and better goods in greater quantity.

Lettuce is one of vegetables that the Koreans have cultivated away back the middle ages.
It is very good to whet appetite in such hot weather as now.
An old book of China says that lettuce seed presented by an envoy of Koryo Kingdom (918-1392) is worth a thousand pounds.
The Koreans have taken lettuce with peppered bean paste to stimulate their appetite and stand the hot weather in the period from spring to autumn.
Lettuce contains vitamins A, B1 and C, calcium, iron and essential amino acid. Its moderate intake helps prevent anemia, but excessive intake produces a bad effect on parturient women and infants.
In recent years Okryu Restaurant and other catering service establishments in the country have served dishes made with lettuce.
Mothers find pleasure in their children’s bright faces. The same case is with the teachers and nurses of the Pyongyang Orphanage.
Shortly ago we visited the orphanage. It was morning hours, so the children who had just got out of bed were washing their faces and tidying up their beds under the care of the nurses.
At the time of morning exercise the nurses were also deeply concerned about what happened to their health overnight.
At mealtimes they paid attention to who were reluctant to eat and taught some children lost in toying with spoons how to handle them to make them accustomed to eat themselves.
At studying time the education rooms resounded with sonorous voices of the children, who were learning mother tongue, singing, counting and drawing. The teachers were explaining them various playing methods while giving them a correct understanding of natural phenomena.
They were also inducing them to apply into practice what they have learnt, so as to develop their natural attainments.
We found every wall of the staircases, corridors and living rooms decorated with pictures congenial to the minds of children and conducive to their education. The pictures which deal with fairy tales and animations were very effective in helping the children to have a proper understanding of good and evil, human conscience and obligation.
At the playing time the children ran to the exercise rooms and playground installed with table-tennis board, spring board, basketball post, boxing kit and other amusement facilities, bike yard and roller rink . There they were playing merrily.
The orphanage had an indoor wading pool. It was in November, a closing autumnal period, so cool wind was blowing outdoors. But the wading pool stood at a warm temperature and the children were beside themselves over joy splashing water, while the nurses were paying constant heed to them lest they should fall.
Darkness began to fall. Some children watched cartoon films on TV and others were absorbed in jigsaw puzzle and playing with dolls in the intelligence room. At last they fell asleep. Looking at the children who were sleeping on cozy beds, the nurses covered the infants with quilts whenever the latter kicked them off, and washed their dirty clothes. Literally, they were looking after them with motherly care late into the evening.
The doctors and cooks were also devoting themselves to the care of the children. The doctors provided the children with decocted medicinal herbs, measured their stature and weight and helped them train physically according to a relevant plan. The cooks were also doing their best to satisfy the appetite of the children.
Indeed, the orphanage was overflowing with the loving care of the undertakers.
Dr. Sok Yong Bom, department director of the power-driven machine institute under the State Academy of Sciences, developed lighting fittings that have higher rates of light utility and thus save electric power.
Since his graduation from the University of Sciences some 20 years ago, he has committed himself to the research work conducive to national prosperity.
Despite many failures, twists and turns in his research, he made over 40 inventions with his stubborn will and unyielding efforts.
Six of them obtained the patents of the DPRK and the “multifunctional motor protecting device” won a gold medal at the 25th Geneva international inventions & new technologies exhibition.
