The series is so freaking awesome, it literally uses awesome as an energy source! Even the High School AU manages to make it inexplicably amazing, and the Cop AU, Double K, is great, though not very long yet. Is there anything more, or am I just the newest fan asking for something that will probably never happen?

Also, side-question: If Viral can use Spiral Energy, does that mean's he's no longer infertile?

The movies are a retelling of the TV series with some changes. Most notable is the final 15 minutes of movie 1 and almost every part of movie 2.

There's a High School AU manga where the gang are a group of high schoolers, Leeron is their dean in a Chinese dress, and the Spiral King is the principal of a rival school and a (too) loving father to Nia. It's actually hilarious, but it captures the essence of the original series... somehow.

Yea, I remember all the fun times we had when the show was airing and everyone was in love with the show. It's probably the fondest memories I have of /m/, because while there were some people who didn't enjoy the show they weren't dicks about it (possibly couldn't be because the love was so strong) and threads were mostly just people enjoying themselves, chatting, making pictures and what not. I doubt there'll ever be another show that'll unify /m/ so much ever again.

At the risk of sounding negative, I wasn't a huge fan of the show when it came out personally. Obviously it had some good qualities, but I could sort of see why it took off in the United States in a time where every show in a reason wasn't being picked up for easy distribution, and anime wasn't quite as widely accessible (though it wasn't VHS trading in the 1990s by any means), but wasn't as game-changing in Japan by any means.

It definitely had its moments, but too much felt like rehashing the same dilemmas, solved by shouting and speed lines and Yoko's tits over and over. Your evil minion of the week is defeated, another one comes in, ratchet up the scale a little bit, from caves, to cities, to continents, to moons, to galaxies, etc.

Not a bad show, just not one I'd watch again personally. I actually found the movies more enjoyable, it felt like it skipped the boring grind and just brought in the highlights, when the plot was just a justification for giant robot stomping in the first place (as it was intended, I assume).

Gurren Lagann is a show that, if the movies had better pacing, would be more of the definitive way of watching the show.

It's a show that has very few really good moments, but a lot of also dull trash. I'd still rather would watch the movies or recommend them now a days. Even showed my girl the movies first and she tried watching the series afterwards and just got bored with it sometime after the first Beast King, and she loved the two movies.

It really only had three-ish real final enemies.
The first was Beastmen in general and then the first of the Four Generals, who managed to kill the secondary character permanently and was just working for the next big enemy, the Spiral King, who was only an enemy because he was defeated by the true final enemy and forced humanity into suffering in the name of survival. The third enemy is the collective hive-mind of a species that tried to kill every other living being to prevent the universe from being destroyed.

The themes tend to repeat, yes, but that's because the entire show is about how the drill represents life itself; you start out small, wind into larger and larger loops, then repeat. Sure, you may hit a few stones or caverns, but you can always keep digging.

Thanks for introducing me to a new series, OP. Never thought I'd fill the void after Double K. Links for those interested:
