Here is a quick question...just how successful is Gundam in Japan? Is it some huge money maker? Are there younger Gundam fans, or is it mostly older men who enjoyed the early anime?
>>
It's one of the most widely known anime franchises and has become a cultural icon to the point where they were considering it as a mascot for the olympics (hot beaten out by Doraemon last I checked). It's also one of Bandai's biggest regular money makers on their annual reports.

You may as well have asked how big tom and jerry or scooby doo are in the US.

In popularity terms it's like Japan's star wars
>>
>>13511548
not really big anymore, then

kinda quaint

>Is it some huge money maker?
Bandai's top above Kamen Rider, Aikatsu and One Piece.
>>

Well, that's the thing...Tom and Jerry are iconic, but they're not really big. We get like, what, a direct to video movie every few years for very small kids? A shitty TV show? It's not like there are a lot of 'die hard' Tom and Jerry fans.

Star Wars is Japan's Star Wars though, because it's massive over there too. Shit, it was part of the inspiration for Gundam by Tomino's own admission.

There was a TV show in the mid 2000s that I remember being pretty decent, but it had a run that lasted maybe a year.
>>
>>13511527
It's become part of Japanese pop culture at this point.

Its their Batman. Which is to say, everyone knows about it and gets the most basic references to it, but the vast majority of people only know the rough details beyond the basic story premise, and only dedicated fans know about it in detail.

Everyone in America knows Batman. Lots of people have watched the more popular and recent versions of the character. Few of them actually read the comics.

In Japan, lost of people see the commercials and advertisements that remind them that Gundam is still a thing. Maybe they watch the most recent Gundam when it is on TV. Only otaku go out of their way to track down the original mobilesuti gundam because it is old and shit, which leaves most of UC as the playground of reclusive nerds because most of UC assumes you watched the rest of UC and give a shit about the one year war.

good analogy but I'd replace batman with starwars
>>
>>13511578
Yeah but there also isn't a giant Tom and Jerry statue outside.
>>

It fails as an analogy because Star Wars is famous world wide and each time the movies have come out has only become more popular, not less. Mind you, Batman isn't a great analogy for the same reason, since he's popular world-wide too and has only gotten more so over the years. Gundam is only really properly famous in Japan and a few select other countries. Most people in America, Europe, Australia and so on wouldn't know shit about it. You can't say the same about Star Wars or Batman.

I'd say Star Trek would be better. Both shows even started out getting canceled and then revived later while having one set of fans who eat the shows and everything else up and another who probably just watched the original series along with whatever new movie comes along.
>>
AUs are for children, they're the cyclical kids show cash cows.

UC is aimed at the older fans who buy fuck tons of expensive high end model kits with their income.

It's not like the first PG was an AU Gundam or anything.

The first was the RX-78-2 in 1998. We didn't get an AU PG until 2000

Badly

It might help if they stopped making shitty Tom & Jerry cartoons. The recent shows have this horrific art style which looks utterly awful whilst trying to mimic the proportions/looks of the original Hanna-Barbera era but with a weird direction style.

The only good recent stuff were a few good special one off Tom & Jerry cartoons they've made which were like the swansong of Takamoto & Barbera since they had them back and it shows. They brought back the old style of comedy and direction whilst melding in the Chuck Jones style designs from the golden era.
>>
>>13511628
Which one? They had several 2000+ series but the only good ones I recall was the few special one offs they did at the beginning of the millenium before Barbera died.
