I enjoyed the first season since while it was dumb, it knew it was dumb and was happy to have fun with it's silly premise. It had some melodrama, but kept it to a balanced mix so that it never became overly soap opera. The second season was basically suffering the whole way through and got dull very quickly since it forgot to include any silliness. I didn't even mind the finale, since I thought that Shoko becoming the main pilot of Valvrave 1 to honor Haruto was a nice way to finish things. The show set out to show how a revolution happened and did do that, even if we never see what happens afterwards and there's a large gap between there and the epilogue/flash forwards we see.
That said, I liked Saki and the hikikomori girl along with Thunder and Jewbro, the Waffles had a good design and actually used tactics enough that they rose above their design to become cool little grunts, I liked the idea of a story about habitual liars and how it fucks things up as a habitual liar myself and I had enough fun watching it that I'd put it above some other mecha shows I've watched over the years. I hope someday Valvrager fucks off so that every now and again we can have a decent Valvrave thread.

It relied enitrely on shock value, the mecha fights were forgettable as fuck, forced drama was par for the course and characters were bland and forgettable.

Valvrave is the easy answer, it is literally the physical incarnation of all hopelessness focused entirely on twists and shock value that becomes outdated after the firs viewing. Valvrave is the worst when all is said and done. Valvrave is a complete failure, a failure to provide good characters, memorable scenes, or even to entertain. Why does Valvrave fail at being dumb fun? And why should you not watch Valvrave as opposed to an anime very much like it, or an anime whose sole purpose is to provide easy brain candy. After looking at the lack-luster characters, the stupid plot-twists and all that other wonderful bullshit. For all its eccentricities, Valvrave is a show that's missing a lot of soul. When you watch a show that tries to achieve that same feeling that Valvrave attempts, I at least feel, it's a show born because the creators wanted the audience to have a little fun. Valvrave feels like it's engineered for the sole purpose of keeping the audience around long enough so they feel obligated to buy merchandise, and all the craziness that it contains: those stupid plot-twists and ludicrous situations, are born from that. And yes, you could argue that's the purpose of every anime that's ever existed, but still, you're not supposed to be so obvious about it. Valvrave is an empty fireworks show; an hollow mess that's devoid of passion, creativity and soul, that feels like its very blue-prints was built to pander to the biggest demographic possible. Valvrave is the worst mecha-anime. Not self-aware. Not "so-bad-it's-good". Not clever in any way. It's the inevitable result of putting together as many typical tropes of the mecha genre as possible, mashing them together, and hoping that it will be eaten up by the masses. So yes, just... plain... bad.

That would imply the ending was emotive on some level, even if that level was frustration. And the entire second season isn't even frustrating, it's just plain dull because it overloads so fast and so hard on melodrama that you become numb to it almost immediately. Even as someone who thought the idea of Shoko becoming Hito's pilot was quite appropriate and liked the changed message in the cockpit I wouldn't say the ending was worth any tears or emotions.

This was pretty much the dominant opinion on /m/ while it was airing. Unfortunately, Valvranger has basically contaminated discussion so severely that saying 'it was okay' is enough to completely derail the thread from the start.
It was incredibly, horribly dumb, with a horrible plot, an incoherent setting, and a completely unlikable lead, but it had its moments, at least in the first half. Also, the waffles were great grunts. I'll disagree about the ending, though. While it was reasonably well done, the season leading up to it was atrocious, and the concepts it used (memory loss, MC death) were so over the top and obviously created just for maximum suffering that it was hard to take seriously. If Haruto's character was better developed, if the writing was better (or at least more consistent), it might have been fine, but as it stands I'd put the ending on the level of Destiny's ending, which is an accomplishment considering Destiny made you sit through twice as many episodes of unlikable characters doing nothing (also, both it and Destiny had really nice OSTs).
In summary, it was overall shit, had a few good points and was reasonably fun to watch with /m/, at least for the first half. Most of the mindless bashing reeks of memesters who are just riding Valvragers's garbage.

Well yea, that was the point. He opened a thread with that question and expected a slew of "Valvrave unit loses" responses as per normal since he normally picked units clearly better than VVV1 in opposition for similar threads - but everyone said the Waffle would win because it's actually a pretty good unit even within the show and has a wide variety of equipment to choose from along with a shield that is shown to be very effective even against the VVV's. He of course tried to spam his own opinion that it was shit just like everything from Valvrave, but was for once drowned out. He got assblasted about that and started a shit load of other threads in retaliation, including several other versus threads that were pretty unanimously in the favor of whatever not-Valvrave unit he'd picked.
