I still wanna know explanations for the backstory scenes in the opening. Like the remains of the Photon Lab, Mazinkaizer SKL underneath it in chains, Ryo seemingly being one of many clones, Ken and Ryo having a conflict with each other, etc. It's so damn interesting and makes me wonder if it takes place in the future of one of the existing Mazinger universes, like Shin Mazinger.
It's just visuals. But i think it's save to say it's up to your imagination. Like for me, SKL might be too powerful of a Mazinger so it chained them up. Meanwhile Kaidou might started up as an unstoppable street thug and Magami technically had a backstory in the story. They meet up one day, hated each other's guts until they found SKL where they started becoming some sorta pal while hating each other or something like that.

We also get to know just what the heck the skull force was doing on machine island even before Yuki went there.
That's why Kiba called them out in the OVA when he saw them. He already met them before and even offered them to join forces with him. Of course he was rejected. A girl named Quest from Kiba's base also tags along the skull force. Actually, she secretly works for Himiko. At the end of that part, she just part ways, which is why we don't see her in the OVA.
We also get to see the skull force fight one of Garan's commanders, Gouma, pic related.

After going through that in the cockpit itself, Magami who was there all this time without Ken realizing it just sighs and calls Kaidou a monkey.
Professor Uzuki who's in charge lost an eye while trying to pilot Mazinkaiser herself.
This is the test pilot before Ken Kaidou. He went insane.

Chapter 12 is where they reached the OVA. This chapter actually decides to retell the beginning of the OVA where Yuki is on the ship.
The change here is that they made Scarlet's death a little more dramatic than the OVA.

For a chronology:
Volume 1 (chapter 1-6) is about some random missions like fighting scarface etc. One of those chapters however, we find out about Faust and his pilots (Sereint which calls Faust her dad) and Sereint's partner, Zem. This is where we have the meeting of Ken and Ryo and some other stuff.
Volume 2 (chapter 7-12) is about the events that happened just before the OVA. Kiba offers Ryo and Ken positions in his empire. They refuse, meeting with Quest from Kiba's base, where she was secretly spying on. Then the skull force fight Gouma, Garan's next in command.
Then Chapter 12 is where we reach the ova events, and it's concluded within a chapter. Basically, watch the OVA.
Volume 3 (chapter 13-18) is just about Magami, Faust and his goons. Octagon chicks join the fight. That's about it I think

The manga IS the original work you fucking retard. Mazinger Z (the manga) exists as a series of short stories about teenager Kouji Kabuto, his friends, and his super robot. The first volume sets up the story, but after that it's pretty episodic. It's incredibly ironic that you would call the source material filler, though, as opposed to the 92 episode series that was literally more than 70% filler. Those episodes about how Boss got his robot, and how the Jet Scrander was designed were the exact definition of filler. Nagai's manga didn't cover half of those episodes, so I can't possibly imagine how the shorter story is the one with the filler. Mazinger Z (the manga) has no filler. It is exactly as long as it needs to be, and it's nice and short.

It's not even the same way Kouji was ready to kill Dr. Hell at the end of the first episode. When he killed Dr. Hell, he got the "fade to white" as Koujo Big Bang Punch'd the shit out of Hades. Dr. Hell being dead on the ground, requiring Kouji to still defeat Hades is incredibly logically inconistent if you assume it takes place after a scene where both of those characters already died.
