This is less /fa/ than he's been.
Mazinkaiser's definitely better as a story about Kouji himself. Shin Mazinger he's there to pilot Mazinger itself, he's an engine that moves the plot forward and Shin is 80% plot. The stuff with him and Sayaka is just an afterthought in Shin, where it's usually a major chunk of any other Mazinger series. They have a moment early on in the series and then eighteen episodes later Imagawa finally remembers she still exists. I love both shows but Mazinkaiser is the base standard for what I think of when I hear Mazinger: badass hero with an invincible robot taking on MOTW.

Mazinkaiser is pure, concentrated Mazinger. And I mean that in both reference to the manga and the Toei series. It's not as serious as Shin, but that doesn't mean it's worse for it. In a lot of way, it more closely resembles the Mazinger manga in tone rather than plot, like Shin does. And besides all of that, Mazinkaiser is wonderfully animated, directed, designed etc etc. It just oozes style, fun and love.
