The Sith were a species of Alien that lived on the planet Korriban. Around 10,000 BBY A large Schism took place within the Jedi order between Light and Dark side users, and the Dark siders were cast out. They eventually made their way to Korriban and conquered the native people who had an affinity for Dark Side sorcery, and then bred into this group until they were indistinguishable from each other. The leaders of the empire Korriban eventually created were called the dark lords of the sith. Future Dark Side wannabe's with delusions of grandeur would also accept this title, even if they had no connection to the sith of those old days.

Speaking only from the new canon, the original script and novelization of A New Hope mentions Darth Vader as Dark Lord of the Sith. Lucas mentions in his notes for the prequels several ancient sith lords including bane and Ruin, and of course Bane's spectre appeared in season 6 of the clone wars.
