False equivalence. Operation Rainfall was a massive campaign on all fronts, not a single small group within the fans of a game. Hurting it even further that the thing you're fighting for, in the eyes of the public makes you come across like Robert Mapplethorpe. Don't give me that "muh cultural differences" shit. That's a shit excuse. and you know it. Cultural differences doesn't lead to actively changing something in the game's character creation. It's a minor change, but that doesn't change the fact it's a completely and utterly unnecessary change.
I could've gotten past the costume- I don't really /like/ the idea of changing it, since you're meddling in the work of somebody else, but I could've gotten past it. I can live with it.
But what gets me- what really gets me- is fucking removing the religious/psychological references. You know, one of the (spiritual) franchise's hallmarks. Why bother at that point? It's one of the series' defining features. Robots, psychology and religion, complex characters.
And that last one is probably fucked too. 8-4's recent translations already have notoriety for the butchering they gave Fire Emblem Awakening, which radically altered every character's personality and literally did not fucking translate 2/3rds of the protagonist's personality choices.
If you actually give a shit about quality translations, I recommend skipping this. Don't give money to a company that does this shit.

On the subject of censorship though, I wonder if it's less those darn "SJWs" and more Nintendo. From what I recall, Nintendo has 'censored' its games during localization for a very long time, way before SJW and "progressive politics" got the traction they have now. Supr Castlevania IV, for instance, had naked lady statues in one stage that were covered up in America, and in the American version of Dracula X (the SNES version of Rondo of Blood), Richter kind of exploded into pink stuff when he died rather than blood. I remember back when I was a kid (I'm 28 now, so this was in the 1990s, when I was in middle school) that a good deal of calls for censorship came from conservative corners. A lot of religious folks in the U.S thought games like Doom were 'Satanic' and blamed it for tragedies like the Columbine massacre, and Jack Thompson (a pretty 'right-wing' lawyer guy) was very notorious for his lolsuits against the gaming industry.
Now, even back then there were also (in America, at least), left-leaning politicians who supported "censorship" of videogames; Senator Lieberman (a democrat) being one of the most notorious. The game "Night Trap" (some crappy FMV fest about vampires eating cute young girls) got a lot of notoriety in those days. But most of the concern was about the psychological effects of these games on children, the sort of stuff we associate with 'SJWs' today wasn't really as prominent, at least not that I recall.

A lot of it is at the feet of 8-4 Translations, who have a history of really, really horribly fucking up translations.
However, Nintendo of America has also had a very, very poor track record of translations and localization lately. Shit like throwing memes into Triforce Heroes that aren't present in the NTSC-J/PAL releases, mediocre publishing, etc.
The thing is, despite Nintendo's track record for censorship (which was wrong then, and wrong now), they /didn't/ censor Xenoblade Chronicles. Which had similar themes and concepts as the rest of the Xeno series.

You can't compare Nintendo's censorship in the 90's to what is happening today because ESRB didn't exist back then so Nintendo had strict self moderating lines as means to not gain the ire of politicians looking to score culture war points. See the curtain over Tharja's butt in Fire Emblem: Awakening. or in Azure Striker Gunvolt where one of the characters Zonda can swap genders at will, so instead of using the proper pronoun depending on what gender Zonda is at the time, they went with a fake one referring to Zonda as a 'xe' The icing on the cake is that Dina Karam worked for 8-4 during her poorly received tenure as Community Manager for Mighty Number 9. (Look her up if you don't know what she did.) If 8-4 is charge of localizing Fire Emblem: Fates, don't be shocked if they remove entire parts of the game, rewrite characters or alter portrats in order to make them more 'acceptable for the public'.
As for the argument of censorship as a while. Tom from XSEED (which is known for releasing games uncensored) has this to say why any censorship is bad news, because of the precedent it sets.

8-4 was in charge of localizing Tri and 3U though, for the most part if 8-4 doesn't take on the job of being a moral objector and censoring things, they do a decent job of working off the source material or previous localization (See Dragon Quest VI)
But what 8-4 has done recently doesn't make it excusable. I think a watershed moment might occur depending on what happens with the Amie mode in Fire Emblem: Fates, since if 8-4 is in charge, there's a good chance it'll be axed.

There are better quest pointers than in the original Xenoblade, where only story quests had them. However, the main issue is that stuff like actually finding people to start quests still works in the same way - you have no markers and people have daily schedules, so finding them might be troublesome. There's also also the collection quests and such, which continue just as grindy. Still, if you enjoyed Xenoblade this is actually an improvement in that sense.
The problem with the main story is that progress is gated by world exploration percentage and some character quests (tied to party members). You can't just advance in the main storyline all the time if you feel like it, unlike in Xenoblade. The ending also seems to be sequel bait, rather than being very conclusive.
