I think the idea was good. The problem was when Shiro, first, got thrown into that kangaroo court and we had to go through his naive ideals of hopefully not killing too many enemies to win the war, which is what most civvies hope for. Second, we had the Zeek episode where the guerillas just massacred some enemy pilots and Shiro had to bitch about it, rather than just having them, surrounded and outgunned, surrender.

That's your headcanon, only reason the first director doesn't get feed feces is because he croaked right before Shiro properly met Aina face to face again. The episode right before the mountain one was already piling hints at how terrible Shiro's reunion with Aina would turn out. Romance trash aside even the first half was being retarded with Ginius' character. Director change has nothing to do with the crap parts of 8th MS Team, the thing was dumb starting with episode 1, it managed to do fine for a while for the simple reason that it had to focus on secondary characters first and get them out of the way before touching the Shiro/Aina/Ginius subject.
I will never understand people who gripe about romance in Gundam. It's like they've never watched Gundam and are just shitposting on /m/ to get people to respond to their posts.

We don't take cartoons as seriously as Japan and some other nations do. Unless it's a major movie by Pixar or Dreamworks acting on a cartoons is mainly seen as something a b list actor or has been would do for some easy money.
