A newtype is a human who awakens their esp and psychic potential. Hence a Natural can be a Newtype but a Coordinator can not be. It's spatial awareness. In order to survive in space, humans needed to be aware of the direction, speed, and angle they were floating in relation to debris, enemy weapons, and other units. Eventually some people with the potential to have amazing spatial awareness, space being the keyword, would awaken to Newtypes. Whether or not it's an evolution or just simply a talent is arguable.

Yeah, and Fukuda lies to cover his ass a lot. This is the same guy who in one interview said SEED was supposed to be realistic and portray what war is really like. Other sources have him saying that he wanted to make it into a super robot show and says "it's just an anime". We have him saying Shinn is the hero because Kira strayed from the path of justice, then Athrun was the hero, and now there's word he said that he decided to make Kira the hero at some point while the show was airing. When asked if Shinn would go to Kira's side after the finale, Fukuda said he had no intention of that. Then he sprung Final Plus on us.
