They let urobachi write it.
They wanted Inaho to be the next Kira Yamato.
And when that wasn't happening they sidelined the princess till almost the end of the show and turned Slaine into a lame bad guy just so Inaho would be the sole protagonist and people would have to like him.
You people have an unhealthy obsession with A/Z.

Don't insult kira, at least he was a character with minor development. A/z is absolute shit. Garbage cg, boring fights, and almost no plot. The most interesting aspects of the story are barely investigated. The only thing I liked about it was all the keking, edgy gore, and dat asseylum.

It failed in creating moral ambiguity.
For example, in SEED, even though it's shit, you have a realistic potrayal of war and you end up feeling bad for both sides.
In A/Z it's clear that the antagonists are evil and protagonists are good, it's simply childish storytelling.

Inaho was already dull as dirt, so the only appealing part of the show was seeing how Inaho thought of ways to use Grunt mechs to defeat super powered VERS mecha.
This was all invalidated when they gave Inaho's "super-powers". Sure they try mask it as being "logical" and "scientific" but all that was just excuses to put Inaho to absurd "power-levels" where he can match his enemies on the fly.
Not to mention it left a huge gaping plothole because apparently the good guys could install a super-computer into an eyeball but not on no board computer of a single mecha. Then suddenly the other characters could now match VERS mechs at the finale because of Inaho's "Battle Data", something the even opens more plotholes.
For a series the boasts how the good guys win with actual applied sciences, it treated its audience as dumbasses who could take this kind of stupid writing.
