Good, we have enough planets in Sol as it is.
>>
>>13468815

This actually happens a lot in other star systems.

Lots of the exoplanets we're picking up these days are easy to detect because they are 'Hot Jupiters', basically, a jupiter size planet or larger, but orbiting in a mercury-type orbit.

The reason this is commonly thought to happen, is if there is too much gas, dust and icy material in a system's planetary nebula as it forms, then there's enough material to create a whole bunch of very large gas giants.

But so many super big planets in one system don't play nice, their gravity interacts and usually theres one that will be slightly bigger, that flings the other planets out of the system to become rogue planets, however, that large gas giant also loses a lot of it's orbital momentum from ejecting the other giants, and as a result falls down into a closer orbit to it's star.

A hot Jupiter is usually the sole remaining victor in a game of gravitational bumper cars, worn out and nearly defeated, spiralling into it's star.

>yfw the jovians are about to start their invasion
>>
>>13468871
Yeah, that is one of the main problems, but in any case, we do now know that Hot Jupiters are very common.

This seems to make sense, if theres a certain critical mass of matter present in the planetary nebulae, and that at every point above that you get these Gas Giant gravity wars, then that's a significant chunk of the spectrum that is in Hot Jupiter territory

>>13468868
When they collide? the gas giants? they usually don't get close enough to. generally it's their gravitational fields shunting each other while they're both flying around on their own orbits.

If two did collide i'd suppose you'd get a very hot and chaotic collission, and either the debri would scatter out into a field belt, or if the larger planet managed to stay more or less together, it'd absorb the mass of the other one.

Jupiter plowing through the inner solar system is probably the reason Venus ended up with such a slow rotation period(a Venusian day is longer than a Venusian year) and ended up retrograde, through either interaction with Jupiter's gravity or another planet sized object being hurled at Venus by Jupiter's gravity. Similarly, Jupiter is also probably the reason Thea got launched at Earth, giving us the Moon as a result.

There's also and idea that Mercury was impacted by another similarly sized object early on that blasted off it's crust, leaving only its mantle and iron core behind as Mercury has an abnormally large iron core in comparison to its overall size.

The bands around Jupiter are much more concentrated than what we get from the Sun. It's like taking all the radiation Jupiter receives from the Sun and focusing it into a belt around the planet. I don't know that you could put an object with Earth's mass in a stable orbit around Jupiter that's far enough out to avoid it.(Jupiter's Magnetosphere itself is larger than the physical size of the Sun)

That's all assuming that parking the Earth in Jupiter orbit somewhere doesn't fuck with the orbits of the Galilean Moons and send them crashing into each other or the Earth itself. Who knows what kind of havoc Jupiter's magnetic field would wreak on Earth's magnetic field too.
>>
>>13472830
It is certain an interesting idea though.

All the recent news about Jupiter's past deeds resulted in reading more about rouge planets. Haven't watched Diebuster but the Bronze Tribe in Heroic Age had hollowed-out planetoids to use as hiveships they could move to where they wanted it to be.

We could probably make a tourist industry on bringing alien species around to look at the remnants of our surface monuments by speeder and shuttle.

>"To your left, honored visitors from Vho'oord, is an ancient monument built in a time where construction was done entirely by human hands! The Earth part of the tourism industry would be immensely expensive, and constantly changing prices, but totally worth the price if they are passing through a particularly beautiful(but dangerous) place.

>Earth flies in erratic flight paths, zipping past other planets, stars, etc and using them to gravity swing around to change directions and occasionally swinging into the orbit of a star to do trade
>Depending on which sector Earth is at, the ticket price can vary from being dirt cheap(In cases where its in orbit of a star for trade), to stupidly expensive(In cases where its flying to the hardest to reach and/or stupidly dangerous parts of the galaxy just to get a good gravity swing to change directions, like that time they plotted their flight path to pass near the galaxy's central blackhole)

A primitive weapon, yes, but to the Hytox who only had energy shields for defence, solid weaponry are their weakness, its able to hit their vehicles directly
>Taking pride in Hytoxian metallugy, they bet their lives on the armor of their vehicles.
>Unfortunately, the humans of the past took longer to figure out energy weaponry and thus were very hellbent on making their solid shell guns punch holes in everything from thick metal to concrete

But what is it really that's going on here?

I like that.

I wonder what they'll think if they found derelict sailboats that survived the conversion of our planet into a stellar vessel.

>"Guys this total proves my windsurfing theory."

>"What about this suit with flaps connecting the arms and legs and with this... er... primitive chemical rocket backpack? These look like they can fly too-"

>"Oh, that's for underwater exploration in those 'oshuns' that are now all dried up; you know, those connected bodies of water we still see on other planets. They move those flaps like the m'monga slugs you find in the coolant pools near the Third Sector Translight Drive."

>"... Steve, stop fucking with us."

>"Bob, we got a stranded tour group on the surface, their speeder broke down. Group #35, Speeder #26"
>"I told you to send that speeder to maintenance last week! Do we have spare speeders?"
>"If we had one I wouldn't be asking you for help."
>"Goddammit, I'll go up and find an operational vehicle on the surface to fetch them, send me their coordinates. They're the group with 20 people, right? I'll need to find a 'baz' or something if I want to fit so many people."

Jupiter isn't all bad. It's also a cosmic linebacker that absorbs thousands of comets that would otherwise hit us.

Uranus has been pounded at least twice.

>"Bob, What on great Gaia is that?"

>"The ancients have some weird stuff back then"
>"Yeah, I remember the time I found a 'turack' that turned out to be an alien and flew into space. What kind of crazy shit do they have back then?"

Nebiru is coming back to settle an old score with Jupiter.

I hear Uranus has some crazy high speed winds.

So what is the deal with the Earth and Moon, are they parent and child, siblings, friends, or...lovers?

Also if the moon was a woman, what kind of woman would she be?
>>
>>13474809
>what kind of woman would she be?
A two-faced one, of course.

Always shows her nicer side to Eart.

Earth got hit by another plantetoid so hard that she puked up a baby.

Comets soar, and stars nova. Rules of nature Earth, and you can't fight nature

Neptune is the windy one, Uranus is the colder one.
According to Wikipedia, Uranus' wind speeds max out at about 240 m/s, while Neptune's can reach up to 580 m/s.

Like a mother most likely

>>13474857
Neptune is spectacular

Uranus is actually the least threatening gas giant. It's the best place for Helium-3 mining.
>>
>>13474809
The Moon is our invaluable partner. It stabilizes us.

Unfortunately, the Moon is slowly drifting away from us.
>>
>>13477129
The good thing for us though is that the Sun would have gone Red Giant long before it finally escapes Earth's gravity.
>>
>>13477109
Ice Giant, it is not primarily helium/hydrogen.
>>
>>13477145
For the purposes of He-3 mining, it is. No one's going to be tapping the ice mantle or the core, and the atmosphere is ~97% H and He.

I heard that unless theres a physical object that would collide/fuck up our gravity, the Solar System wont be affected at all by galaxy collisions
>>
How the hell can planets make sounds if they're being recorded in a vacuum?
>>
>>13477196
Radio waves.
>>
I'm still in denial that Ancient Aliens might have actually gotten something right.
>>
>>13477196
Those "sounds" are actually radio emissions that tweaked to be brought down into the frequency range of human hearing.
>>
>>13477189
yes, galaxies are huge but have very low density

most of the interaction is through gravity
>>
>>13477137
That's strangely relieving, since the thought of the Earth being all alone makes me sad
>>
>>13468934
Saturn is the one who keep Jupiter in bay. Otherwise, He'll end up coming closer to the sun.
>>
>>13477291
Galaxy collisions usually lead to them fusing over time - they pass through each other due to "inertia" but their high-gravity centers attract each other afterwards.
The sky would look more interesting after a good billion years.
>>
>>13469264
I don't think gassing someone from a gas giant would work too well, now burning them is a good idea.
>>
>>13477189
It's not that it won't affect us at all (unless, as you say, something's actually aimed at our system, which isn't likely), but that the effects will be basically identical across the solar system so we won't care.
