Is this a new meme I'm not aware of? I really liked Hikaru, at first he struggles with the traumatic experience of seeing a death in the battlefield, he's not a bullshit magical prodigy and kind of an average every man to his final battle (there's another character to fill that role) and considering he's right in the tip of a love triangle he could be a lot more annoying and wishy-washy than he is.
So, how is he terribly bad? Bland I understand. He's supposed to be the most average of average guys. But bad? C'mon.

I just finished SDF Macross lately, and I swear, it didn't even feel like he had decided anything by the ending. It was just that Minmay wasn't part of the picture. In spite of that, he didn't seem ready or eager to be with Misa whatsoever. I could see him continuing to be so damn flaky that he'd start to propose and change his mind halfway through for no apparent reason

I like that he started out as a cocky pilot who thought he was king shit because he'd won some trophies in civilian jets and was willing to take the piss out of Roy, do risky shit to show him up and look cool and just willing to have some fun.
I like that he saw some shit and got knocked on his ass by the reality of war and becoming a soldier along with dealing with first crushes.
I don't like that his kind of cocky and playful attitude from the first episode never really re-asserted itself once he'd decided to become a soldier and gotten used to that life. I think it would have made him a more interesting character in the second half or so if once he'd gotten in to life as a soldier that side of him had started to come to the fore again. Sure, it's harder to be like that when you have someone like Max around to show you just how relative your skill is, but that element of playful jibbing between male friends that he and Roy have in the first two episodes never really feels like it's there again after that point sadly and it would have added a good sense of camaraderie and made him seem more distinct.

Max and Kakizaki were GOAT supporting characters, in fact most of the Macross supporting cast are. Don't know if that makes them better though characters though, having to fill an MC role is tough. Side characters can just be a fun trait or two and that's all they need. Max's arc with Milia was great though.
