They'd be all but admitting Destiny was a massive fuck up that they can't continue form in any way.
Which they can't do because it's Japan and it would bring shame to many people.

00 got almost as many kits with it's 50 episodes, MSV line (72 between November 2007- November 2010) and movie than SEED did with it's SEED, Destiny, Astray, Frame Astray, Stargazer and MSV lines (November 2002 - March 2008, roughly 5,5 years). That's about half the time. Now, why did I stop there and not count later rereleases and the new Astray models? Because that's before AGE aired.
Going into AGE, 00 had slightly better sales than SEED in terms of Gunpla (see pic related). Almost the same number of kits and better total sales in half the time.
But people only talk about how popular SEED was and how much Gunpla it moved. 00 had lukewarm reception and less DVD sales, right? So, how badly did Destiny fuck up selling kits for that to happen? Especially when you consider Destiny had a 30% bigger budget than SEED and twice as more HGs released (both in total, since they continued making Destiny Gunpla until 00 started, and by the time it finished.)
Consider this. They made two versions of the Exia for Gundam Build Fighters, Amazing and Dark Matter, but they had to wait for an old contract to expire before they could be used. Then in Try we get the 00-inspired Celestial Sphere Gunpla while the Destiny Gundam gets nothing. Maybe it wasn't the writer using 00 suits because he wrote that show, maybe it was Bandai pushing them because they sell better? Hell, maybe the Build Strike was the plan B.

Where does it place after SEED? The peace process after GENESIS went down and the Peacemaker Fleet got sent packing? Or is there supposed to be another big event in-between it and SEED that is now only alluded to in this hypothetical sequel?

Getting nothing would've actually been better than wasting a reasonably compelling character (for the setting) on a snap build.
Also, didn't seed move next to no Gunpla outside of the hero suits? Gundam SEED was basically the Nintendo Wii of Gundam franchises; yeah, it reached a lot of people, but it didn't have any lasting impact. The trick isn't to sell a new main MS, it's to set up a new generation to buy a half-dozen variants of the Zaku II.
