It's just that a silhouette is like the most important aspect of design. If you can't identify it by the silhouette, then you run into problems.
Though, some designs might not be immediately differentiable off a raw silhouette. Military weaponry tends to get a whole lot of IT ARR ROOK SAME from those not invested in knowing the differences, one person might be able to tell a difference instantly where another is left confused...
But still, a distinct profile is a key design thing. The shape of a mech is quite important in, I guess you could call it the "character" of the machine?

That's just plain wrong. Silhouettes are all about the interplay of different shapes. Wander Over Yonder and Adventure Time are apples and oranges anyway. The former has very strong silhouettes while the latter relies entirely on colors to differentiate its spoondoodles.
