I didn't mind Julian. He was never a pain in the ass, and the few times he hulked out in rage were pretty amusing. That episode where he watches the documentary on mankind's emigration into space and the rise of the empire was pretty good.
He was pretty uncomfortable with everyone turning to him to fill in for Yang, but in the end everyone agreed that a hodgepodge quasi-functional rogue military force would be better held together by a cult of personality

In what way? Both serve different purposes. Shinji is the sole MC of Evangelion and his character is about a realistic(or attempts to) reaction to end-of-the-world shenanigans and him being the chosen one, among other things. LOGH, as I explained above, doesnt work that way.
Julian was an exposition receptor for Yang and a character device to show how war isnt actually a matter of honor or such and the importance of defending ideas instead of people, among other things. Not to mention he's not the MC, or at least not the only one.
