Shinn is a realist character because his life is ruined, he tries rectify or justify himself and his situation, and never does. He gets kicked to the curb just like real people do everyday. That makes him an attractive character, because you can sympathize or empathize with his story.
He's one of the most human characters in the whole franchise yet people blindy hate on him. Same as Shinji Ikari.

He can interact with other character, sometimes with Kamille his brother in being an autistic angry gundam pilot whose girlfriends get stuffed into giant death robots, other times as the mentor to a island filled Fafner pilots.

L rewrote much of Destiny to erase most of the animosity between Shinn and Kira. Shinn even has a moment when he saves Kira and Athrun during the invasion of ORB from the OG villains.

I never hated shinn. I hated fukuda for not giving him a proper ending. final fight should have been kira vs shinn and athrun vs rey. basically they need a good transition to the special ending where shinn finally meets kira at the orb memorial. that scene was literally perfect

Shinn's relevance to the ovall story dewindles as the story goes on, and they even reduce him to a "stand here and guard this thingy!" enemy because they don't have the time or the budget to have him doing anything. I can name MotD that have put up better fights than he did in the last episode.
The problem with Shinn being a "badguy" isn't the idea of it, just that how the series does it, it's fucking nothing. There's not even an attempt to tie in his character in the Destiny Plan. I'd at least be happy if Athrun said something like "blowing up Orb will make more people like you" or something, but no YOU'RE KILLING THE FUTURE, instead.
If you want to know how poorly the series is written at this point, ask why anyone other than Gil thinks that the Destiny Plan is a good idea.

I would say this is good directing. The character does not get a happy ending. He's lied to constantly and manipulated into thinking he's the hero.
It's only natural that Shinn would pick the false reality of the video game where he can be a hero over what actually happened in the anime.

The destiny plan isn't a horrible idea if you understand the history of economic thought. It isn't inconceivable that dogma dictates roles in society instead of self interest. Many societies today still do so. Most developed nations are moving towards forced equality instead of freedom.

I actually liked the basic concept of Shinn being a character who becomes completely entranced by a charismatic villain, and ends up becoming increasingly blind to how this ideology is leading him to ruin. Think of it like a show where the main character is a Zeon fanatic. That sort of story would be more interesting the the overdone redemption tale.
Fukuda's actual writing for Shinn was just awful though, since he didn't actually make any of his characters resemble actual people. The basic idea could have been done better justice in different hands.

Not true. Destiny showed that the extremist factions were being driven from behind the scenes by Logos. Halfway through Destiny that whole coordinator-vs-natural shit was already over with and it shifted to free-will-vs-determinism.
