I honestly have no idea why anyone thought Gothicmade would be some kind of masterpiece. It's literally a doujin anime and marketed as such. The tiny amount of people working on it is a clear indication of this. It's interesting to look at, but it's obviously not made to compete with normal theatrical features. If anything, it should be compared to independent one-man shows like Cencoroll or Hoshi no Koe, which are also all very interesting works but unrefined as Gothicmade.

It's because unlike those two you mentioned, Gothicmade was a theatrical release, and Nagano is a fairly well known name in mecha anime. The trailer also made it look quite cinematic.
You could tell it wasn't standard quality due to the weirdly stilted animation in the trailer though.

Eh, the head is too tempting of a target. Honestly, the torso, especially the chest area is going to give you the best chance at armoring the cockpit. Yes, it's the center of mass, but it's also the center of protection. You could do like Code Geass had and have the cockpit in the back, to also act as an ejection seat in an emergency.
Gundam cockpits really lack that sort of escape.
I may not know what a gothicmade is, or why everyone gives it five stars. But I am sure as hell feeling these designs.

WELP GET READY, cause I'm gonna tell you! Gothicmade is a complete retcon of Nagano's magnum opus, Five Star Stories. Five Star Stories is an absolutely epic manga, spanning 12 volumes. The events of the entire story were written out in outline form in the first volume, because for Nagano, his idea was that the events themselves weren't important, the characters and how they reacted were.
Gothicmade shits all over this by redesigning all the Mortarheadds (mechs) into stick-thin, even more physics-defying than usual abominations with nonsensical joints and rediculous weapons.
