I wasn't aware the last movie's ending was so good that it was in danger of being ruined simply by the existence of a sequel. I enjoyed Pacific Rim, quite a lot even, but I'd never classify it as strong enough that any sequel would ruin it. Especially when the entire thing is basically set up from day one to be a franchise anyways.

Blowing up the staging area is like blowing up the Death Star. It's a big blow yea, but the evil empire behind it is still out there.

iirc after Pacific Rim came out Del Toro or the writer reminded people that the bridge works both ways. While the scientist got knowledge about kaijus and the aliens, what did the aliens learn? And also mentioned that whatever's left of Gipsy after exploding is sitting in the alien's hands too.

It's over. ;_;
Legendary had to foot most of Crimson Peak's bill themselves since Universal bailed due to it being rated R, and it hasn't even made back the budget, let alone the marketing. Getting gangbanged by the family-friendly Goosebumps and the bog-standard Paranomal Activity didn't help its case. Universal jumping out on CP was what stalled PR2 to begin with, and with CP's failure to rope in the Mexican and tween crowd for mega horror movie bucks (especially given its enormous budget, when most "horror" movies are made with $100 and free Subway sandwiches for the cast and crew), things are grim.

Our only hope is for some /m/an to win the lottery and dump money into Del Toro's pockets.
You know what you have to do.

InB4 Godzilla v Gypsy: Dawn of Earth Buttfucking the Kaiju Empire, where Gypsy goes after the the proto Kaiju that saved SF decades earlier, only to realize that it wants to protect Earth as much as it does, and despite the two fighting initially, we eventually have a righteous team up of the two fighting alongside one another where no city on Earth is left without some facet of catastrophic destruction brought about by a blitzkrieg of Kaijus sent to Earth all at once all of whom are eventually defeated by the worlds finest kaiju stopping duo. Even Kong gets a cameo appearance!
>>
>>13433166
Dude, there's a pretty big difference in the average movie goer that would watch Crimson Peak and the one that would watch Pacific Rim.

Pacific Rim will be judged by its own numbers, which were pretty good especially in the international box office.
It's got the makings of something that is Hollywood's greatest addiction: Franchise.

If the suits think that the first one got the foot in the door and the second one might out-perform it and move some toys, it will get greenlit.

Some Victorian Era Horror film isn't going to change that.
>>
>>13436980
You're talking about Hollywood executives. They operate on completely different logic to the rest of humanity.
>>
>>13436980
Executives hold things against directors who appear to be risky bets like Del Toro.
>>
>>13431190
Is wasn't a EVA clone. Del Toro even went into detail about how HE WANTED to make an EVA clone but the studio didn't allow him to. I imagine the sequal would be more EVA clone-ish. There were rumors of a Kaiju/Yeager hybrid that was basically a biomechanical mecha that could be piloted by a single person, but had an A.I. the pilot needed to fuse with. If you did it poorly, it fried your brain.
>>
>>13437115

If that were the only deciding factor DelToro would have stopped making big budget movies years ago.

>I've got to ask — are you an Evangelion fan?
That's one of the four animes I've never seen. I will acknowledge openly the influence of Patlabor, gladly. I'll fully acknowledge most Gaiden movies being an influence, but Evangelion, I have, and they bought it for me before the movie started and I made it a point not to watch it. I said "I don't know if it's close or not, but I don't want to be influenced," you know? Now I'm gonna watch it. I always loved the designs. I actually bought a couple of the toys because the look is fantastic. I don't know if it's the good guy or the bad guy but from a purely visual point of view I love it. I will watch it, I'm hugely influenced by anime; I have no problem with that above board but unfortunately I haven't seen Evangelion. I'm so attracted to the designs that I'd blindly go and buy all the toys but my daughter has watched it this year and said "You're gonna like it." And my daughter is my guru. My two daughters are my contact with the world.

http://www.craveonline.com/culture/531757-exclusive-interview-travis-beacham-on-pacific-rim/2
>Yeah. I think tonally it’s definitely an influence, because really what blew me away the first time I saw “Evangelion” was it treated this genre, this sort of silly genre – or a genre that could be sort of silly, and could be outlandish and cartoonish – and treated it with a real sophistication. Which I really liked. I think what I identified less with in “Evangelion” was the sort of apocalypticism of it, and kind of a surrender to human neuroses or whatever…

As RLM pointed out, it was interesting that he picked up the plot when the war was already almost over. But, if you ask me, there was a lot of wasted potential there. I don't know if this is true for all mecha fans, but I have a huge boner for scenes that take a closer look at the design/manufacture/logistics behind the mechs. I love it when they take the time to provide in-universe explanations for stuff. It adds depth, and it makes the robots that much more impressive (at least for me). In addition to the designing/building/testing process, it'd be cool to see the first encounters against the kaiju, and how the pilots react. I wanna see more like that snippet from the prologue, where Romeo Blue decks Hardship in the face with a fucking bridge. I love the creativity there.

A second one would only be good if they actually go full anime instead of half-assing everything.
So much of the movie is generic Top Gun filler and even with that they couldn't give the main character or his asian waifu a real personality beyond "tragic past lol".
Their characters needed some development and the other mechs needed to be non cannon fodder.

Seeing how another movie del Toro wants - but never manages - to get greenlit is an adaptation of At the Mountains of Madness, by the man himself, the chances are as good as they could possibly be.

So the second movie is gonna have jaegers piloted with a single pilot assited by a kaiju brain right? Then at the end of the movie, either the brain gets damage or it goes berserk and has to shut off so the main two characters have to co-pilot like the good old days.

That and maybe a kickass berserk scene where a pilot succumbs to kaiju instinct and goes on a rampage. Might be cool.

That's terrible logic if I ever saw it. That's like saying shooting yourself in the foot is the best possible way to shoot yourself. What is worse is that it's not even true. No, it isn't. Info dumps are a terrible thing to do and any competent content creator will tell you doing infodumps is a last resort thing you engage in when you can't do it properly. I can keep listing even more reason why it's wrong, if you want. The "show don't tell" maxim doesn't stop just at prose, nigga.

It may've been awhile since you saw the movie, but it shows a lot. Narration isn't a bad thing, and if you think it is Bizet, Shakespeare, and a whole host of other historical auteurs would like to bite their thumbs at you.

By chance, have you not read the Illiad?

>The infodump showed a lot
>he compares going "hey, guys, here all the story we couldn't bother to show you" with the works of Shakespeare and Bizet
>Asks me if I've never read the Iliad
Well, I know you have, so here:
http://classics.mit.edu/Homer/iliad.1.i.html

I want you to count the lines that it takes to reach the story, and I want you to see how the actual info is introduced in later books.

Dont' worry, the Illiad is a good read.

>So much of the movie is generic Top Gun filler

Is that a bad thing? Top Gun is the greatest movie ever made after all.

Roughly 10...out of 15,000+.
Still doesn't change the fact that even some of the best works of fiction use talking heads.

110% chance if the movie did what you wanted and just showed monsters coming out of the ocean and military failing to kill them with no words you'd complain that they didn't explain what was going on.

>A second one would only be good if they actually go full anime
Oh yeah. For real.

It should be about a teenager who accidentally finds an empty Jaeger and turns out that he is a better pilot than all those trained veterans and accomplishes more than they ever did.

He should be socially retarded or even autistic and all the hot girls would just fall for him anyway.

The protagonist would speak like a retard and often just throw out idiotic half-finished sentences e.g. "This guy... in such a place..."

There would also be a rival Kaiju who is far more intelligent and dangerous than the rest who would appear several times during the story. He'd obviously be unique in appearance, maybe humanoid or with scars or metallic grafts or red skin.

Several times throughout the film, the protagonist would come close to losing, but each time he would think about his friends and it would give him unimaginable power to quickly finish the fight that looked unwinnable mere seconds ago.

Oh and there would also be secret equipment. Like the protag is in a pinch and forgets to think about his friends but then the Jaeger control dudes say "I think it's time to use IT" "Surely you don't mean you want to try THAT in actual battle" "We don't have a choice! We're using THE ITEM"

Fuck yeah anon that would be supah cool!

This was some really really top notch bait, but you didn't stick the landing.

5/8 for sheer effort

I really wished pacific rim ended with Yancy ejecting Mako from cockpit, taking full solo control of the gypsy danger and then plunging the core of the gypsy danger through the worm hole destroying the final boss and sacrificing his life for the continuation of the human race. I dont care if that would lead to normal movie goers getting upset that there is no happy ending. They basically established it at the very start of the movie that he has the ability to pilot Jaeger by himself so why not use it. I think the ending would have alot more hype if it ended with Yancy defeating Slattern by himself taking the full brunt of the piloting system, somehow locking himself onto Slattern, i dont know maybe using the Dangers sword to pierce both the unit and Slatterns main frame and body . Then plunging himself, the Gypsy danger and Slattern through the portal and activating the nuclear core and winning the fight.

He has to force mako to stop piloting the danger tho and the units self destruct can only be activated on board the mech.

More fights. I hated how they spent so much time introducing other jeagers, only to have them die like bitches in an instant. Also more varied combat, stuff like gypsy's chain sword. I think when people complain about the plot, they're talking about how its character driven instead of setting. There's an interesting setting to be explored, instead we got charlie day goes to honk kong.
