It's a sensible call given what we know in the first episode, but come G there's really nothing final about it, so the term drags along a bunch of connotations that it shouldn't have.

It's not Heavenrend bad, but it'd still be worth backpedaling on.
>>
>>13396785
>>13396813
Swan Song is a questionable translation for a couple reasons. The first being that it misrepresented to fans what exactly a zesshou did - a "Swan Song" implies that it's the last thing you're going to do, i.e. you sing your Swan Song and then you die - which led to a lot of people being confused about Tsubasa and Chris not dusting after Kanade did at the concert. The second is later in the series Tsubasa literally says "Supaabu Sonngu," more properly translated as "Superb Song" at a later point in the series, specifically in reference to a zesshou.

I think that confusion would have remained given what we saw every time it was used until they started abusing it in G.
And honestly I am still kinda confused as to why Kanade dusted in the first place.

>>
>>13396865
Kanade dusted because she had next to no (or was it literally zero?) compatibility with Gungnir, and she was off her LiNKER during the concert because Ryoko/Fine claimed it would have interfered with the Neushtan experiment. Lower synch rate = higher recoil on your body when you zesshou. Chris and Tsubasa both have fairly high natural synch rates and both of them nearly died when they used their Zesshou, so you can probably figure out from there why the backlash was so extreme with Kanade.

I've gone on long tangents about why "okonomiyaki" as "pancakes" doesn't even make sense from a localization standpoint.

For fuck's sake nobody goes out for "pancakes" with fish flakes, mayonnaise, cabbage, etc. with friends after school. If you want to localize it just say pizza it's less accurate but actually fits the context better.

Outside of speed (H&D still isn't fucking done) absolutely.

Accurate, no memes, and the lines read much better. The longer ones that are trickier and require a bit of creativity are much better in H&D's as well, and they don't over localize their scripts.
>>
>>13396899
It wasn't because of LiNKER withdrawl. The dusting was entirely a result of the backlash on her body from using her zesshou. The backlash was just much higher than normal because A) Kanade's natural synch rate was practically zero and she wasn't on her LiNKER and B) at the time, neither Kanade nor Tsubasa knew how to properly channel a zesshou through their Armed Gear and pumped all of the energy directly through their bodies, which resulted in even more strain than normal.

>Epistrophe
You're completely wrong. She was listing off things with -shi which is used for those types of lists in Japanese. It's a construction for that type of sentence, and there weren't separate clauses or sentences to apply epistrophe to in her list of descriptors for the steak. She did have a break in sentences, and then the second sentence ended with -shi, which doesn't line up 1:1 with any English constructions, but they chose to represent with a cute rhyme. That's good translation.

Judging by your aggressive addition of commas to your sentence, I'm going to guess English isn't your native tongue. Why do you feel the need to comment on the translation of one language you don't know at all to another language you barely know?

To be honest I feel like FIS has the potential to be more interesting than the main trio, or at least that following their development would be more interesting. That is reliant on the writers getting off their asses and let them interact with everyone instead of Maria only talking to Tsubasa and Hibiki and trying to make DMJii's arc entirely self-contained.

>>13397065
I try not to let the context of a song's use in the show affect my opinion of it in a negative manner. If I really liked the context, it'll get a boost (like Rainbow Flower or IGNITE Ginwan), but if it has sad/frustrating context (Little Miracle/Kimi to Iu I find it more enjoyable to just ignore it.

>>13397051

>>13397068
Really? There's no other possible way that Carol's line could've been written in Japanese, and the writers (who've been seen to be able to turn a phrase) are completely ignorant of how repeating sounds at the end of phrases works? That's a hell of a coincidence. Maybe epistrophe isn't exactly the right term, but it fits pretty closely (the scheme's very similar to that one quote from The Art of Rhetoric that tends to come up) and rhetorical devices tend to have a bit of give in them by default.

>Judging by your aggressive addition of commas to your sentence, I'm going to guess English isn't your native tongue.

She's super informal, the problem is just that the Japanese version of being rude or crass is just being really informal. Japanese doesn't really have traditional "swears" like English does, so their equivalent of being rude is just being incredibly casual. It's more like talking down to someone than calling them names or directly insulting them.

Chris speaks very informally and is short with people, and is often rude. Both commie and H&D have her swear sometimes, but H&D gives him some actual battle trash talk which is good instead of just sprinkling in swearing.

The biggest issue with Commie's portrayal of Chris is that they butcher the tone behind all of her non-screaming one liners (giving her American pop culture references in previous episodes) or something like this here. The one on the left is Commie, and they make her sound like an idiot in the context of the scene because "Hurr! Don't bring a silly thing like logic into this!" sounded funny to them. You can see with the H&D line that the reality of what she was saying was different.

This is why Commie's claims of "We localize so it sounds natural in English and matches tone." is complete bullshit. The lines about her parents later in this episode are another example of how they they don't care about mutilating lines.

Please stop pretending to understand Japanese. What she said was the equivalent of "It's bitter AND it's smelly AND it disappoints (AND stuff)." That's how -shi works when listing things in Japanese, there's no special grammar device to note there. It's not epistrophe at all. I'm sure you're eager to show off the new term you learned in English class, but you're applying it completely wrong. It does not fit pretty closely.

>You'd be completely wrong on that. Hell, your comma use is just as "aggressive" as mine,
You used it needlessly to indicate a verbal pause in the post I quoted.

>I'm not saying H&D are shit or anything like that.
You said they weren't great because "They didn't include this thing through a creative English translation" when they in fact did, and the other thing you're looking for isn't there at all. You're wrong because you don't want people thinking that H&D are doing a fantastic job succeeding at everything commie claims to do, when in reality they are.
>>
>>13397236
Unless she pulls a Tsubasa/Maria, character song never gets reused. LM also only worked in that context of ep11, Hibiki immediately switchs back to G-beat in the next one.
>>
>>13397251
What about something like kuso?
>>
>>13397251
Yeah but sometimes the informality is just informality and can even be friendliness. A lot of simple people can speak informally and it's clear they aren't being crass (at least in the context of anime). Example is that the stereotypical ramen chef will use really informal language, or a certain friendly banchou-type.

>>13397274
It's kind of a swear but not with the same connotation as English. "Kuso" is used for things like earwax and snot, I doubt it's like "shit" where parents will get upset if they hear their kids saying it or hearing it on TV. I don't think Japan really has taboo words, or at least not to the same degree America does.

>gives him

Sorry, Chris.

>>13397274
Chris insults Carol with a phrase containing kuso in episode 6. H&D translated it as "The little shit" which is pretty much spot on.
>>
>>13397274
That's why I said "doesn't really." Kuso is a weird case where on it's own it's technically just a hyper-casual way of saying "poop," but depending on the context it's used in would make more sense when translated as an exclamation of "Shit!" or something. That's honestly one of the biggest difficulties translating from Japanese to English (or any two languages, really) - both literary and societal context can affect the severity of a word by a massive amount. Take "Daisuki" for example. Literal translation would be "love," but depending on the context it can be anywhere between what Americans would use "I like you" for or what a couple standing on the altar might say.

>>13397289
This is also true, but that's often when it's close friends. In Japanese, the "automatic" setting for speaking to people you don't know is polite speech. So speaking really informally to someone you just met compared to someone you know really well (for example, Chris talking to Leiur vs. Chris talking to Hibiki) changes the tone of speech from friendly and casual to demeaning and insulting.

I'm not. Repeating a phoneme is a pretty common thing across many completely distinct language groups, but I'm certainly not anything like an expert on Japanese. Is there really no other way this could've been phrased? I know the language isn't as lax on grammatical correctness as a lot of others, but is it really that inflexible?

>You used it needlessly to indicate a verbal pause in the post I quoted.
Yes, I treat this as informal dialogue rather than busting out Strunk and White. I might even put in an ellipsis!

It's true that I don't want people thinking H&D are absolutely perfect. That basically never happens, and people treating things as either completely ideal or ultrashit (with nothing in between) bothers me. I think it's important not to pretend flaws don't exist, even if you like the overal product. I do think that H&D's probably overall better than commie at everything but trolling and releasing in a timely manner and I have not implied otherwise, so you can see why this defensiveness is a bit confusing to me.

That's why your interpretation of what that should be translated to in English (ie. what connotation or "feel" it has) is completely worthless.

but is it really that inflexible?
Since you're speaking from a place of ignorance, I'll educate you. Carol's line in question is 苦いし臭いし美味しくないし (nigaishi kusaishi oishikunaishi) and means literally "Bitter and stinky and not delicious." Japanese leaves out subjects, but we know she's talking about the steak so it becomes "(The steak) is bitter, it's stinky and not delicious." She used 3 verbs in sequence, in the same sentence to describe the steak. In Japanese when you link verbs like this, it's typically done by using the て (te) form of adjectives, or as a し (shi) list. Te form would have turned it into 苦くて臭くて美味しくなくて (nigakute kusakute oishikunakute) which STILL would have had them all end with the same sound. In Japanese, you don't just link adjectives together with a comma or verbal pause in their normal dictionary form (nigai, kusai, oishikunai. Oh hey look, they all end with the same sound again) like you do in English. That "repeating sound" you're pretending needs to be translated is literally their version of a comma between adjectives to link them when describing one thing, or the word "and". That's how it works. The second sentence ended with shi when it didn't really need to, and it created a sort of rhyming flow to it, hence the rhyme in the line. It's pretty much perfect, and captures her cute tone.

>I might even put in an ellipsis
Don't you fucking dare.

>I don't want people thinking H&D are absolutely perfect. That basically never happens
But they pretty much are, and it happened. That's why people are thrilled. A group gave accurate weeb subs that still read well and are clever in English. It's a fucking miracle. Why are you so buttmad about it?

Localizing proper Nouns has been done regardless of sense. How many locations have different names in English than they do in their native tongue? And I don't mean like "Napoli" to "Naples", I mean stuff that makes no sense like "Deutschland" to "Germany".

>I'm annoyed because I went "hey I think they missed something, but so did the others so it's not a big deal" and got "GO FUCK YOURSELF, ILLITERATE CUNTBASKET".
I posted an example of why they're great, and you decided (and kept insisting) that line was a mistake because of a grammar rule in a language you don't understand. You caught a couple insults because you felt the need to weigh in on something you don't understand instead of asking "But was that line really correct? I heard..." and then you made it a point to say "Sure they're good, but you know, they're not THAT good."

>I seem to have been wrong in my criticism, which is fine. I do genuinely appreciate the explanation. Thanks for taking the time. If H&D really are _that_ good, I think I need to switch out my copies for their versions.
If you'd have asked from the start you would have gotten it. Yes, they really are that good. I honestly can't tell you the last time I saw a group sub with a niche audience in mind (people like us) and keep all the weeb shit in tact without forcing in unnecessary jokes or memes, and then on top of that write it in English that flows very well and almost perfectly matches the tone of the Japanese lines. Knowing Japanese, wanting to accurately represent the script, and knowing how to write creatively in English is seldom scene in subbing. Chris had a line later that episode about her parents that read a lot differently in HS and H&D, so I checked Commie's as well and then listened carefully to the moon. The line sounds really nice in moon but when translated anywhere near remotely literally it looks like shit in English. H&D's wasn't as pretty as the moon one, but it puts the idea across and comes much, much closer to matching the tone and feeling than the other two do. I'm very impressed with their work, and found your "Don't overrate them!" attitude offensive. I can not fucking wait till they do S1 and G. They desperately need (and deserve) the H&D treatment.
>>

in terms of CharaSongs, S1 was the most consistent in terms of quality, with almost everything being at least good, with most songs in the "great" or "fantastic" range. G was much less consistent, but had some spectacular highs (Ressou, Waikyou, Edge of Goddess Works), but also lower lows than S1 (Oukyou, Bye-Bye Lullaby). GX wasn't as consistent as S1, but wasn't as hyperbolic as G, with some very good songs that aren't QUITE as good as G's best offerings, but neither were it's lows as bad as G's worst songs.

Maybe Terashima had a little growth spurt in between seasons because at the end of G they're standing next to each other and she is clearly a little shorter than Andou but a lot of GX shots make them look around the same height. It's weird but Kayano's voice has really grown on me. She's one of my favorite new seiyuu, both in terms of acting and singing. The fact that she stands strong when surrounded by veterans like Nana, Minami, and Nanjou really shows she's either a freak of nature prodigy or a testament to her dedication.

I really wish I could find more anime she's done songs in, especially solos. Especially solos where she hits the lower octaves, since something about the way she does those is super distinctive and sounds great. Kayano's "Woo yeah yeah" in Orbital Beat (especially Live) is absolutely perfect for that song.

That's not the art style. That's just your shit taste at work.

>And Kirika's ass.
Kirika looks like she has broken hips in that pic.
>>
>>13399135
A lot of bones look broken in that pic.
In fact, some of the body parts look more like skin-colored balloons filled with water than human flesh.
>>
>>13399138
Chris seems fine apart from her fake tits and face. Kirika looks like she got broken by a big guy.

Is there even anything /m/u/ other than Nanoha and Shinfergia?
And Kannazuki no Miko, I guess, but that's not really something to brag about.

Cross Ange is the most obvious.

There are some series with individual characters like Proist or Shadow/Luna.

Honestly /u/fags have to pick at breadcrumbs more often than not. I don't believe Proist is even on the lineup and she is one of the few characters who is actually stated as being into women.
>>
Muscular/fit Andou, y/n? Idea suddenly came to me (and I rather like it) but going off the swimsuit scene at the beginning of GX it's not exactly the case.
>>
>>13399277
Andou is the tomboy, right?
She looks to be into sports, exercising and all other things that involve gym clothes, at the very least.
>>
>>13396694
Bonding over women who weren't their mothers but served as a mother figure and physically abused them for being failures?
>>
>>13399288
Yeah, Andou is the tall one with the spiky brown hair. I got the idea actually looking at >>13397995 and seeing that her tits are actually almost as big as Terashima's, which I never would have guessed from any of her other scenes. I figured I could play off that since she does wear her clothes kinda loose, making it harder to tell what exactly her body is like.
>>
>>13399296
That and being being early enemies.
>>
>>13399277
Depends on how /fit/ we're talking. I know I can't speak for everyone (especially given the kind of musclewomen I've seen in fanart) but I think more muscular than, say, the fit Street Fighter gals (like Cammy or Makoto) starts leaning a bit too much for my tastes.

Dunno what you'd intend to do with this feedback. I assume you're a drawfag?

I think the interesting thing is that she was embarrassed during the talent contest and not as into it as the other two who were super gung-ho, but then she spontaneously had a cat outfit during Beefu Stroganoffu nya. Call me silly but I'm still unpacking that.

Writefag, actually. And I was thinking along the lines of Mikasa Ackerman from Attack on Titan, where she's clearly quite fit but not what most would call "musclebound."

>>13399315
Oh yeah, she's definitely got her tastes in what I'm writing. Her tastes being Itaba and Terashima.
