I want desperately for there to be a remake of the OVA done in the classic style that finishes the story. Ushio and Tora is a remake done in 90's art, so it's possible.

Birdy tries to leave Tsutomu for dead and only brings him back to the ship because Tuto catches her in the act.
Tsuomu is just a smarmy little prig who constantly nags her, and never really tries to understand her, even after seeing how traumatic her childhood was. They aren't buddies like they were in the OVA and Decode.

He's still useful as a jr. detective partner, and Birdy is still fun and flashy, but they aren't as likable. Which is a shame because the manga has some really intricate conspiracy sub-plots.

I liked the Charlie Chaplin/Buster Keaton bits with Birdy controlling Tsutomu. Nice little touches of levity that balanced the more serious scenes.

>>13209567
While pursuing a criminal suspect, alien police officer Birdy Cephon Altera accidentally kills a human teenager named Tsutomu Senkawa. While hisbody is being repaired, she hosts his mind inside of her body. In addition, Birdy's body can reconfigure itself to resemble Tsutomu's (though Birdy can override Tsutomu's will and is the dominant mind). The two become a sort of buddy cop duo, and face off against alien criminals, killer robots, and cyborgs from the CIA among other threats. There's not really much TnA. Birdy's costume is meant to look like an acrobat's leotard because it suits her aerial/grappling fightng style, just like Superman's costume was supposed to look like a circus strongman. There was a manga from 1985, an OVA from 1996, a remake manga which ran from 2003-2013, and an anime adaptation called "Birdy The Mighty Decode" which ran from 2008-2009 but which desperatly needs another two seasons and is sorely underappreciated.

Really my only exposure to this series is finding a VHS of it in a bargain bin at a Big Lots in the late 90s, liking the picture on the front and side (It had one of those things going on where each VHS in a set had a piece of a picture and you were suppose to put them all together to get a nice picture), and finding what I read on the back really interesting. But I was a dumb kid then that didn't wanna buy it because "it had a picture of a girl on it, people might think I'm fag".

Always wanted to watch it though. Actually forgot about what it was called until just a couple years ago. Annoyed the hell out of me because until I found it again I honestly thought I just made that memory up.

According to some manga spoilers on 8ch:

Birdy gets captured after a fight with Nechula after trying to stop her from killing Revi so Birdy can arrest her. Weakened from the fight, she gets knocked out by Gomez and put into a medical tank which also suppresses her strength. It turns out Revi has been working with the surviving Alterian Emperor, who's body is frail and dying, and who's consciousness had to be placed into one of Revi's robots. The Emperor is attracted to Birdy, and wants her to give birth to his heir because she's a superior Alterian genetic specimen. Birdy refuses the offer, and says that Ixorians are sterile anyway. It turns out that Revi found a way around this through advanced artificial insemination techniques (which is how Gomez and his wife were able to have a daughter). Birdy tries to think of an escape plan, but it turns out she doesn't need one because Gomez and Chigira help her break out before she can be the Emperor's babymama. So Birdy gave up the chance to be the new Empress of the Alterian Empire because she didn't want to have the Emperor's creepy clone baby.

Anybody else have the laserdisc version of the OVA? It comes with some promotional material and apparently Birdy is only supposed to be 16 in that version, so she's only a year older than Tsutomu and the same age as his sister. Kind of weird how they made her older in the remake manga and Decode (late teens, early 20's), they usually make characters younger.
>>
>>13224744
That's quite interesting. It makes more sense with her at least in her 20's (or their equivalent to it) given the role she plays. A 16 year old dressing up as a space hooker to get information out of a giant dog probably would've turned some heads, come to think of it.

...anon, it's a reference to Kintaro's costume.
>>

>>
I liked the pacing of the original manga more than the remake. The remake manga drags on too much, probably because it's trying to retell a monthly series in a weekly format. That's not to say that the remake is bad, but I understand why Decode was such a liberal interpretation when the manga had only covered so much ground. I actually wish to remake had been monthly, then maybe it would have been more compressed storywise. What's worse is that Yuuki still had the magazine tell him to end the manga early, sothe conclusion was rushed. He's working on two series right now, so I wonder if he'll ever get the time to finish Birdy properly.
>>
>>13227162
The point is that the Birdy is worryingly fuckable at all currently known stages of its life cycle.
>>
Posting some pasta from another OST thread:

I have yet to hear anything that tops Yugo Kanno's soundtrack for Birdy The Mighty. The orchestral pieces are majestic, sweeping, and absolutely gripping. The rock/electronic pieces combine thrashing guitars with forceful drum 'n' bass beats to emphasize urgency. And finally, there are peaceful, poppy tracks which combine live instruments with electronica to create this warm, urban sound.

Yet another reason why Birdy was such an under-appreciated series.

SIDE Birdy is just fantastic. The piano opening, then the upbeat electronic and string sections kick in, then back to the piano and DAT SWEET SAX.

I don't have the best vocabulary when describing music, but it has this sense of heart-racing adventure, yet there's something familiar about it. You'd think the saxaphone would make it sound dated, but it doesn't. It just sounds so vibrant and exciting and it fits in perfectly. And it's just so idio syncratic with the show. I can't imagine Birdy jumping around Tokyo to any other piece of music, just like I can't imagine Superman without John Williams' signature theme.

SIDE Tsutomu is very heavy on the brass section, and when it almost sounds like it belongs in a 90's playstation RPG, but that makes perfect sense when you consider his role in the series. He's the young, naive protagonist about to embark on a grand adventure with his mysterious new friend. It's a little more understated than Birdy's theme, but that's appropriate too. Birdy is the flashy, bombastic one of the pair (with her more somber side as signified by the piano), but Tsutomu is the one being introduced to this grand universe.

Well, Gomez's daughter didn't inherit any of his Ixorian abilities, but that's a question of whether or not Revi tinkered with the process or if Ixorian genes are just too difficult to pass down. I'm guessing it was the former, since part of the reason the Emperor wanted Birdy to be the mother of his heir was because of her unique powers (even for Ixorians she's supposed to be uniquely strong, and can even channel her powers into a pure energy form.) She's probably even stronger than Gomez, but lost her previous fights to him because she lacks his speed and specialized military training.

It's curious that Revi wouldn't just take a few skin cells from Birdy or blood samples from a previous fight and create an egg to be fertilized with the emperor's genetic material in an artificial womb, but I guess the emperor wanted a true heir, even if his real body is too old to do the deed and his android body doesn't have the equipment.

I think it was implied somewhere that Birdy and Tsutomu were created from genetic samples of members of the Alterian Royal family, which s why they both share characteristics with the emperor (plus there was that hotsprings arc in volumes 16-17 where Tsutomu's class visits the resort which turns out to be run by refugee descendants of Alterian royalty and one of the girls looks like Birdy with brown hair).

It makes sense for super soldiers like Birdy and Gomez to be sterile, but I wonder why Birdy is functionally asexual while Gomez is able to have a wife and a family like a normal human.

Why does 80's hair look so goofy in photographs but so stunning and stylish in drawings? I just run my fingers through that luxurious lion's mane of a Birdy's hair for hours and hours.
>>
>>13230096
The first OVA was 1996.
>>
Is Assemble Insert any good? It's by the same author and based around a similar concept. The main character is a super strong Android girl.
>>
>>13232877
Well, if you were the emperor and had a thing for Birdy I'm sure you'd much rather knock her up properly than create a shake-n-bake baby from her genetics.
So what explanation do they offer for Tsutomu in this? How exactly would he end up being related to any Alterians, let alone the royal family?
>>
>>13234626
But that's the thing, he can't do it properly. His real body is too old and withered, and the robot body Revi made for him isn't up to the task either. What difference does it make if it's in-vitro or a clone?

Tsutomu isn't related to the royal family, it's hinted that Birdy is distantly related to a branch of the royal family that escaped to Earth to get away from a civil war.
>>
>>13233854
It's okay. Short and predictable, but still enjoyable.
>>
>>13234885
The dude is probably /d/ as fuck and sees getting her pregnant as a valid substitute for doing it himself.

I hate how the manga was forced to end just as the invasion was beginning, Birdy got a promotion and a new uniform, and we were just about to find out what was inside the artificial moon. Birdy and Tsutomu weren't even back in their own bodies yet.

Then they go ahead and let Yuuki draw two new ongoing series anyway. Why couldn't they have let him finish Birdy properly?

But in decode second season Tsutomu is useless except for a disguise or mental support for the problems he creates. Still good though.
>>
Any decent Birdy cosplay out there? Or would that be illegal?
>>
>>13287075
I think Tsutomu's role was smaller compared to season one, but that was because it was more about Birdy's past. He still grows as a character, and he's far from a plot device. Going back into Birdy's memories and helping her recover herself showed how close they had become and how they complimented each other.

I watched the OVA more than half a year ago and I wasn't all that impressed except for the visuals (I should probably rewatch it one day for a better assessment), but I watched the first season of Decode on Saturday and I enjoyed it though I wasn't particularly drawn into it. I just finished the second season of Decode though, and thought it was brilliant, even if the ending was a little anti-climactic. The OST was used incredibly effectively, the OP was great, loli Birdy, the backstory, the emotional weight to the conflict, the, what I would call, sakuga in the fight scenes and the brutality of some of the fight scenes. It was great in my opinion, though I can definitely see why some would prefer S1 or the OVA.
