Most robots in the Getter universe require multiple pilots because they are complex pieces of machinery.

Saotome designed a robot that would never be at a terrain disadvantage and each form also represents speed, power or overall balance. Consequently to achieve that, you're going to need wildly different form factors. The lanky and quick land based Getter 2 isn't a stable and strong like the underwater Getter 3. Different forms was a necessity.

He's from the Toei show, where he sort of showed up one episode, talked a bit of shit, showed his robot was actually worth the shit he was talking it up, had a dinosaur specifically prepared to counter him and got his machine damaged, went back to go get it fixed and never appeared again. He was the first mech in all of anime to use a shield and sword on the protag's side though.
Then SRW picked him up for some reason, decided that he would now be an Engrish spewing crazed Texan, and that sort of stuck in his future appearances.

Confession: Shin vs Neo is my favourite of the Getter anime.
It doesn't have the highs of New and Armageddon at their peaks but its short length and story lets it stay concise and tell a consistent story, while the other two veer off track after their strong starting episodes. Texas Mack was funny, it actually uses manga enemies instead of pilfering ones from other Ishikawa manga and Musashi's last stand is stunning. Also, STORM is the best opening.
The only thing I can't forgive is fat Gai and the deus ex machina powerup at the end.

I agree, but I didn't mind God Getter because in all honestly, the moment he said GETTER SHINE the fight was over. That they applied it over Shin Getter as a power up instead of then saying SHIN SHINE SPARK and ramming Gore was immaterial to the ending.
