As a follow up to my post the other day on G-Reco's interesting animation techniques comes some other possible revelations on the animation team's efforts to make it look more organic. I grabbed the first BDMV to take a really good look, and there are some interesting findings.

For one, the typical 720p resolution applies, but it's a little more complicated than that because there are intentional artifacts such as chromatic aberration, and possibly even lens blurring effects on the sides of the of frame. Many of the sharper lines here in the hair demonstrate a slight aberration, for example.

On top of that, the image on the BD, like many Sunrise BDs, is subtly aliased. This actually somewhat meshes against the intentionally rough line work, but it makes it challenging to reduce while respecting the art style. This shot in particular has a lot "disconnected" outlines that an antialiasing filter may attempt to blend together.

This image reveals a clearer example of the sketchy shadows they used throughout the show. In particular, the outlines themselves join with the shadow detail, leading me to wonder how the decisions are made to "ink in" the shadows or leave them sketchy. I admire the effort, but sometimes it doesn't really fit too well. For example, the background is actually darker than the Arcane's knee here, and makes it look pasted into the scene.

Noredo pls, you're not fooling anyone
>>
Pretty nice, but watching it from normal distance at 42" in motion I can't tell the difference.
>>
>>12487395
>>12487402
The alternative is leaving it in OZC's hands, so it wouldn't hurt.
>>
>>12487518
Eh, OZC does fine for anything that's not done on cels.

Although G Reco is kind of unique looking so I dunno how that would turn out.
>>
>>12487525
Got a screenshot?
>>
>>12487439
I forgot how much I love this song
Also the animation looks GORGEOUS
I wish I knew how to edit this so I could color the G-Self with the reflector pack colours in the last frames
>>
>>12487525
Not sure if this is the best example, but it is the funniest screenshot I already had taken
>>
>>12487552
Or for comparison, they did Big O's blurays, season 1 was on cels...
>>
>>12487557
S1 was upscaled for BD, don't blame OZC for that. Sunrise cheaped out and didn't want to rescan the film.
>>
>>12487557
But season 2 was digital
>>
>>12487559
Nah I wasn't blaming them for anything, just posting some examples. I don't have the same eye for video quality that you do
>>
>>12487571
And I just noticed for some reason all of those were saved as jpgs, well so much for decent examples
>>
>>12487576
Ahh, well in any case, I meant pics of his G-Reco release specifically.
>>
>>12487583
I was curious about how they looked too, but it looks like my internet isn't cooperating at the moment, either that or no one is seeding right now.

How's retirement going? At this rate you might as well just admit you'll do all future Gundam BDs!
>>
>>12487618
I took all of those forever ago, I must have realized my mistake at some point since then since it is set to png by default now
>>
>>12487622
Sorry I didn't see your another post with King Gainer.
>>
>>12487620
He's like Miyazaki; wants to retire, but can't resist seeing if anything else was going to be done. Luckily, the Ideon project is done (although I wish that one scrubber/QC acts on the latter half's script soon).
>>
>>12487634
Would rather see him be part of a project designed to put the giant clusterfuck that is the entire gundam timeline into a neat ova.

Something that would bring in all of the best of the best in the mecha genre together.

But it'll never happen.

>>12487390
>the background is actually darker than the Arcane's knee here
Isn't that supposed to be that way?

Also, I support >>12487393 idea!
>>

Meteor was overdue. I always intended that. SD Gundam is eh, I'm intrigued, but unless someone can hand me ISOs, I'm not interested, and I don't feel like emailing the guy really. Victory is currently my only exception to retirement. This G-reco experiment is, for now, just an experiment.

>>12487678
It is, but it just looks incongruous in my opinion.

Also I should add that a lot of my fervor right now comes from the automatic ffmpeg scripting that an anon showed me the other month. It's been glorious to set it and forget it once the avisynth scripts have been figured out.

>SD Gundam is eh, I'm intrigued, but unless someone can hand me ISOs, I'm not interested, and I don't feel like emailing the guy really.
I'd have been crushed not too long ago to hear but I have to admit now that the fact that we finally have RAWs at all (decent quality, too) is enough of a relief. Really sucks though that emailing another encoder is your only bet of ever seeing the ISOs (unless blu-rays come out and are uploaded).
>>
>>12487707
They'd need to rescan I think. Those encodes didn't too stellar, transfer-wise. Better than what we've had, yes, but not typical of the HD-remasters we've been seeing for years now.
