How does /m/ feel about lewd shots and fanservice in mecha anime? I'm alright with most of it, but in some cases like Mazinkaiser it feels like it starts to get in the way of the show.
Context is a pretty big factor here.
How overt is the fanservice? What's the tone of the scene supposed to be? Is the fanservice the focus of the scene or a bonus?
Cause depending what the context it can make or destroy a scene.
As long as it's just a "Hey, check out this sexy character" thing and not a "check out this sweet anime titty, fellow deviants" thing, then I don't mind.
Personally, for me at least, a lot of the time it's like putting an unneccesary romance plot in an action film. I'm not here to see panty shots or sex scenes, I'm here to watch robot action and military sci-fi and junk.
That said, I do get a chuckle from it every now and again.
What one has to understand is that large portion of mecha anime creators in Japan also love titties. This is especially prevalent throughout the 80s. As such, it's pretty much a given that with any robot anime, you're going to get a package deal. First comes the robots, then you get some titties. It's not as uncommon as one might think.

Actually in classical art nudity was indicative of a lot of different stuff, but got more simplistic (either innocence or a lack of innocence, usually) as time went on.
Pornography is as old as art itself though, that complicates absolutely everything.

It's not about whether there are tits or not, it's the context. People who actively want fanservice in every single scene of a work are just as horrible as the people who want to get rid of it entirely. They've completely missed the point of fictional media and are basically on the same cognitive level as animals.
