Company makes ultra realistic androids with "synthetic souls" which is something that makes then near indistinguishable from humans in their behavior. These androids are used for everything from companionship to labor.
However they contain an issue where after 9 years and 4 months their memory and processing ability begins to degrade (implied to basically be alzheimers or dementia) and that letting an android reach this state will be "bad" (although its never specified or shown just how bad yet).
The MC is the newbie at the division of the androids manufacturer that handles negotiating with the owners and retrieving the androids about to hit their time limit.
