I like Gundam for the characters. The series has well written male and female characters with dynamic personalities. The Mecha's are second to me and I look at the Mechs as vehicles to tell the characters story, rather than the central focus of the show. It's the human element that attracts me to the franchise.
If I feel like the characters in a show aren't dynamic, I won't watch it.
Unless it's Build Fighters, which is just too fun not to watch. I also love camp.

Well, when you put it that way, more generally about characters, yeah I can agree with that. One complaint I have about Wimg is that most characters are unlikable dickwads who don't act even close to human beings just so the show can use them as mouthpieces for its boring heavy-handed views or muh pacifism, muh honor, etc.
What I considered weird was how you said Amuro's character was split between the boy band, you don't see it everyday, and I don't really see it.
And it is par for the course in MC team shows that each member has a more general personality type to differentiate them between each other. Which Wing doesn't really execute well for that matter.
