You do realize they actively discourage that kind of thinking with their models, right? They believe that Lego is a toy for children first, so the sets they design and produce are designed for Children to appreciate.

I'm not really sure what you are getting at with designed for children to appreciate.
Are you talking about it being too advanced for a kid or that they wouldn't find it cool because I would beg to differ on the latter

This is amazing. Is there some kind of site which will tell me which sets I need to buy to build something like that?

Why would they bother when they make multi-millions selling film tie-in lego.

Besides, reliable lego CAD with full parts catalogues and individual parts ordering services have been around for over a decade. If you want lego mecha, you can design and build your own... Which is part of the appeal of lego.

Lego has made some okay mech, you will never see "high grade mecha sets from them".

Lego is first and foremost a kids toy, for kids to play with.

Most of the cool shit you see in this thread is made by older builders and is too fragile for kids to play with. Buildings from the lego Architecture series are one thing, but robots are another. Kids are gonna want to play with their robots, and they won't be happy when their robot dissolves in their hands.
>>
I remember as a kid Mega Bloks had that Blok Bots line. Full-scale robots that had pilot figures and could also transform. Naturally I went apeshit for these sets. Still my favorite line they've ever released.
>>
>>11287042
I had a couple of those sets. They were super cool but exploded every time you touched them. Stupid MegaBloks quality.

I ended up gluing some of them. Which I regretted once newer stuff came out that I could mix-and-match them with.

Still, I hope I can buy more of MegaBlok's missile launchers; they are much more interactive than Lego's flick missiles or static non-firing missiles.
>>
>>11287069
Yeah I'd say that was the biggest knock against them. I really think they were a bit ahead of their time, with all the clicking joints that caused several other pieces to fly off. Shame too since I had so much fun with those despite the frustration. I also remember a knight set that I had. Came with a big ass sword and shield along with a little knight figure. Kinda wish they continued and improved that line.
>>
>>11287138
Haha wow, I didn't realize they expanded much more on the line with some really col designs.
>>
I'm building my own Lego mecha, but it comes with a little problem - The articulations.

I'm mostly using the round ones you see everywhere since Bionicle sets, but the problem with those ones is that they can only support a certain amount of weight before making the mecha collapse on its own weight, and using other pieces instead of those round ones restricts the movement of the mecha, which is annoying for poses.

Any advices for that, /m/aster builders ? Oh, and can't post pics of the one I'm building, sorry for that.

Mixel joints or a more unconventional approach with t-bars and u clips and shit for small ones

How big are you making yours? If its small enough the ball joints should easily work. If larger though not sure about the waist joints but the hinges I used on the legs of >>11284595 are a good bet. I dont think you can see the hinges on the pictures though
>>
>>11287235
To compare the height, half of a leg of mine makes the whole leg of yours, and what you use for the elbow is what I use for the hands. But I think you're onto something with what you use for the knees, I'll try that.

Option 1a: Work up some overly complex TECHNIC Joints that use rubber bands for tension at the loss of general poseability.

Option 1b: Same as 1a, but instead of rubber bands, use spring-tension shocks or deliberately limited movement in exchange for a more stable assembly (such as a "z" shape where double bars make up the slant, thus limiting how mobile the part would be; such as on a chicken/reverse-joint leg).

Option 2: Find/buy and cannibalize/salvage the snippy joints from Lego Exo Force sets, which have enough resistance to allow for some posing. Really heavy sections will still eventually have them collapse.

Option 3: Find/buy and cannibalize/salvage the stiff Mega Bloks joints from older Blok Bot Kits. A last resort, since posing will be a lot more limited than the Lego Exo Force joints (and moving them does rattle off loose bits due to how much resistance those joints have), but can handle the most weight before custom building.

Option 4: Design your own joints using non-TECHNIC joint parts that have the movement range you want.

Option 5: Double up the ball-and-socket joints if it's primarily using the skeletal Bionical/Hero Factory parts. Movement will be restricted in some ways, and it may not look good due to the uneven design of many of those parts.

Granted, since we have no idea the type of build you're doing, it's possible some of this may not work for what you have in mind. If it's using a Bionicle/Hero Factory base for example, it's harder to use Mega Blok joints or the Exo Force joints since they not only aesthetically ruin the build, they are intended more for regular brick or TECHNIC builds, where movement is more restricted in return for more load-bearing capability.

If you're trying to emulate the leg/waist assembly of a Gunpla, you might want to consider deliberately limiting the degree of movement, either through fixed side skirts, or if you want to keep that level of mobility, replace the joints entirely with an Exo Force joint setup, like this Optimus? custom, or it's stiffer and harder to pose Mega Bloks Bot joint equivalent.

For comparison; the Mega Bloks bot. Less organic posing, but stiff enough to hold a pose. Takes effort to bend them, depending on their overall wear (due to the fact that most joints of this type will be used rather than new).

check it. I recently bought the 3 in 1 power mech lego set. it came with ball joints. being me I decided I wanted havd flexible knees but it failed and they collasped under the torsos and arms weight. so they had to be covered up to stop her from falling. lesson learned do not ever use ball joints unless your mech is light.
