They are clearly meant to be manipulators. Not meant for combat, but certainly not useless. Also, The design seems to have been at least partially influenced by a T-Rex or a crab or tarantula. Perhaps a scorpion. Arachnids have little "mouth hands" like those. They are cool, and you shouldn't complain about them. Your roommate sounds like a cool guy.
