Mechs > Gundam sized robots

Or am I the only one that thinks so? The smaller ones just seem a lot cooler to me.
>>
I am unsure what exactly you mean by mechs that would make Gundam-sized robots not qualify as such.

Also Gundams aren't all that big compared to for instance a lot of the series they rub shoulders with in SRW.

The smaller ones normally have a more utility-minded aesthetic, I don't so much take issue with the size of mobile suit-style stuff but it's the toy aesthetics that turn me off.

Before someone complains I know it's probably transparisteel or whatever but the actual answer is "questionable design covered up in lore". I actually do prefer mechs to be ~8-15 meters but actually knowing something about physics causes "realistic" western-style gray chickenwalkers to break my suspension of disbelief way more than something like a mobile suit.

My main issue with glass cockpit is that it is CLEARLY meant to imitate fighter planes.

However, most large robots are land units, and glass cockpits are NEVER used on land war machines. Not for as long as tanks first appeared in WW1.

Avatar the film justified it by making their walkers, re-purposed civilian models. But any land war machine can never justify glass canopies. At best you have thin slits you can open up.

>>
>>11135857
I agree with this. A weapon of war on land has to have some tougher protection, even if being able to see the pilot is very must appealing in the west. That's part of why humanoid mechs are, well, humanoid, to still personalize the machine even with the pilot is anonymous.
>>
>>11134952
Votoms to Patlabor is generally my favourite scale.
>>
>>11135055
>>11134952
I've fine with smaller mecha, but exposed cockpits suck ass. Great we have a big ass multi-million dollar mecha that you can take out with a 9mm pistol.

Ideally I like stuff Armored Trooper size up to Wanzer sized when talking terrestrial mecha.

Any smaller and you'd probably be talking power armor (which is still cool) and any bigger and it's just more target with little benefit.
>>
Can someone post the comparison picture of a gundam and a modern fighter jet?

They seem large in context with regular, everyday cars and shit. But on the military scale, they aren't too ridiculous.
>>
>>11136107

Yes, it sure is a good thing you can't take out an AT with a pistol.
>>
>>11136149
I know, unless you're point blank, bound up and and got the thing's camera lined up with your big ass hand canon you couldn't hope to kill a pilot with a pistol.

When you've only got a windshield it wouldn't be nearly as hard or as impressive.
>>
>>11136154
Well, that gets back to the fact that there's modern stuff that's capable of stopping small arms fire. It's pretty safe to assume a combat vehicle canopy isn't just plexiglass, even without bringing in crazy sci-fi materials.

But it doesn't really matter anyway, all that matters is whether or not you like it.

I'm fine with mecha of all shapes and sizes, personally. Enclosed cockpits and cameras? Cool. Canopies? Cool.
Variety is the spice of life. Really, it's about judging each individual design, and how it looks in and of itself.

So I heard OP like's centered cockpits. Mead specifically designed the cockpit on Turn-A to be at it's center of gravity to reduce stress on the pilot if I recall. The SUMO shares this feature too, since that was an early Turn-A design. I believe the original RX-78-2 also has a centered cockpit. As do the Orbital Frame's of Zone of the Enders and probably at least a couple of other large mechs.
>>
>>11136392
>As do the Orbital Frame's
Are you sure? I've always had the impression that OF cockpits are below the center of gravity. They seem to be mounted a bit lower than the Turn A's, and most OFs look like they have fairly lightweight legs.

The only realistic application for mechs would be exo skeleton armor that doesn't increase height significantly. Mechs would best be used for replacement to troop combat.

Anything that needs more firepower is better off on wheels and treads, legs are far too much of an engineering nightmare to pull off well.

>What's the smallest mech before it's just worn instead of piloted? And what's the largest power armor before it's piloted instead of worn?
From my point of view the definition is tricky enough that you can have a giant robot called "exoskeleton" and a 2m exoskeleton called "mech".

If the machine can become a drone modifying its electronic a bit, it's a mech.
If it can't because human strength or sense are required somewhere important, it's a exoskeleton.

To illustrate my own definition with ridiculous example :
> An Iron-man suit that can move remotely with no one inside, is a mech.
> A Gunbuster-sized machine that -somehow- didn't had the most basic sensor and required an human to see, target and pull a mechanic trigger... would be a powered-exoskeleton.

My textbook example is that Landmate from Appleseed are mech, cause there's no way human sense or strength is required for it to operate normally.

Oh really...
Then what do you suggest yourself when wikipedia can't help you ?
What is the Madox-01 pictured ? A small mech like AT from Votoms ? Or an exoskeleton like Cyberdyne HAL-5 ?

Does mimicking the operator's move in any way automatically make it a exoskeleton ? Making MS G Gundam and the Gunbuster all exos.

Does the operator's limbs need to be partially enclosed in the machine's limbs ? Ejecting Alien's power-armor and suits with added limbs from any definitions.

I might not be able to phrase it well but I can answer that with my definition.
The Madox-01 is a small-mech because it is seen capable of moving and shooting a gunship by itself and certainly have its own camera. The AMP however is an exos because it lack the sensor to replace the operator's sense. And the suit from Alien is a PA for the same reason.
>>
>>11135062
No, they're like 4/5 meters tall. That's definitively an S size, considering the 10 meters tall Jeeg has always been S.

>>11135217
No, Robots control themselves and Mechs are controlled by people, remote, etc.

In practice it tends to get ignored though.

>>11135857
I think my favorite work with glass cockpits was the Toei Getter Anime, surprisingly.

They started with cameras, the enemy went "let's use EM waves to stop them from seeing shit while we're beating the crap out of them" and then Saotome came up with some super glass shit to help supplement them that was radiation, heat, EM wave, water, and everything else resistant. (which they probably stole from Mazinger Z's "MY GLASS IS ALSO SUPER ALLOY Z" but whatever)

On that note, this is the best mech with a partially exposed cockpit.
>>
>>11151589
I've always wondered, what would happen if Syd Mead did redesigns of classic 70s robots, like Mazinger Z, Getter Robo, Jeeg, Gaiking, etc.

It's because the bigger they get the more ridiculous the design gets. The gundams effectively become superheroes rather than war machines. Smaller mecha are often designed to be more practical looking and you can actually picture it in the battlefield.

the NWR-003 Mobile Warfare/Suppression Engine "Thomas" was a smaller more economical model than its predecessors, more used to the tunnel fighting and urban combat that would mark the 30th century and the rise of the NEO-IRA. Intended for suppression and pacification of an unruly urban populous the "Thomas" was given a fairly humanoid appearance and a humanoid face in front of its core cockpit block. The intent was to bring a "human and humane face" to the battlefield, most however found it disconcerting.

Armed with a sonic destablizer, steam cannon (which could be switched out for a similar scaled plasma thrower), two front mounted spotlights which could double as high intensity laser weapons, next generation ERA armor, and a holding facility in the "mouth" of its chest cavity. (The reasoning behind this is that insurgents would be less likely to shoot at the mobile suppression engine if their compatriots were imprisoned in the body of the machine. This however only resulted in increased mobility kills, and assaults on the engine's admittedly vulnerable rear. A back mounted spot laser weapon and holding cages were installed on the engine's legs and back to somewhat alleviate these battlefield issues)

overall a very useful engine

Rotors are better.

And this is where Zanscare got ahead of the game.

Funny because the Wing MSs were 15 meters, smaller than the RX-78-2.

However when everybody and their goat is packing Strelas and RPGs why send in a chopper?
>>
>>11155838
It's clearly an in-between model of the Leynos and Valken.

Does anyone have the Valken artbook in its entirety?

And what the Exzas? Anyone played Valken 2?

Anyway, I can't seem to properly translate the German name of this boss from the SNES game.

>>11162437
Aircraft can't hold the terrain.
Plus, rotor are quite fragile against light arms
>>
>>11162437
Rotors drink fuel like water and can't idle to conserve fuel. They also have very sharp weight limits.

For this. These small mechs would all be taken down but a RPG.
It's really hard to hit a chopper with one.

Kinda... too normal for me.
I would prefer humanoid robots like Votoms Knightmare frames and Earth Engine Ordinary than this one.
>>
>>11134952

i liked 70s 80s gundam and really most 80s mech properties. the newer stuff i'm not too into but generally i like the real robot stuff slightly more than the super

Anyone played Valken 2 yet?
