He had depression and received electroshock therapy for it, which destroyed his memory. As his memory faded, he realized that he would never write again.
no matter how much he tried to fit it, and tried to live stereotypes(such as being macho alpha, brave honorable soldier, intellectual in paris, family man, rich eccentric etc..) society promoted, it never worked and felt fake, he just couldnt deal with it
