Defend it.
It lets non-white people seek public approval for texts that traditionally would be ignored by their peers, normalizing poetry production and diffusion.
It holds some merit in the sense that it encourages people to try to formulate their ideas and thoughts in a semi-empowering environment.
I hate most of slam poetry. Overrated and usually just hyped up shit (think 22 Jump Street). There are definitely some speakers whose 'poems' tend to hit very hard, and they have enough well-written verses to appeal to the minority and majority.
It seems more like a visual performance than one meant to have a huge amount of literary merit.I think it really all depends on the delivery.

Theoretically, performance poetry allows for written words to gain emphasis and rhythm, which opens up new and interesting ideas as a form of expression. Improvised poetry is interesting as it gives insight to how our mind expresses concepts in its most raw form.

why do they always use the same tone of voice? All of these bitches, all of them, just talk about rape/racism (usually both) and put on the same loud + quivering voice. Goddamn it.
