This, and also download a good dictionary app. Every time I come across a word I don't know I can just look it up, add it to my list, and move on. Learned a lot of great words that way. Like badinage.

When you aren't just learning the name of an object, it isn't about the new word. You need to learn new concepts and make them part of your thought process, so that when you speak you feel the need to use them. Otherwise it's useless to learn, say, 5 words that to you mean 'angry' and use them interchangeably without any differenct nuance of meaning between them.

seems kind of pointless because assuming you already have a somewhat decent vocabulary you'll get crucified if you use a word that even approaches what qualifies as obscurity by modern readers
