japanese literature - does it get any better than this?

I don't know, does it?
What is that book about?

pretty good novel, different from what I expected. Oe tries not to be a Japanese-style writer.
Mishima and him hated each other though, I guess just a classic ideological hatred.

"Kenzaburo Oe has reached a new pinnacle in postwar japanese fiction" - Mishima
but yeah I could see that, seeing as Oe sort of just shat all over japanese tradition.

I haven't read any of Kenzaburo's work, is that a good place to start?
My favourite Japanese writier is Ryunosuke Akutagawa. The autobiographical stories he wrote towards the end of his life are really great.

Mishima liked him at first, but not long after started hating him.
I think Oe always thought he was kind of a joke, and then when Mishima became and out and out right-wing radical he was completely fed up

Thanks for the rec, I'll be sure to check him out.
It's my first Oe book, and I seriously enjoyed it. It's one of his first novels, and is highly regarded, so why not?
Where to start with Akutagawa, and what to expect?
Silent Cry is his masterpiece, desu senpai.
