it's cleanly written, self-aware but not obnoxiously so, and the theme of life being a constant stream of disappointment resonates with this generation, also, marketing.

clean doesn't mean 'plain' or bland, it has plenty of flair and creativity, it's just not showboaty which fits the low-key character the novel follows.
