From what I understand it is Indian philosophy of the Vedic period.

Vedic isn't any older than Avestan, and each are more valuable studied with the other. Both were obviously operating under historic ProtoIndoEuropean thought systems, so the direct answer to your question is that metaphysical questioning begins far before any kind of material or written record
