Yes, always, inevitably. And before writing the plan, I spend anywhere from one to three years polishing the idea. It's very slow work, but by the time I sit down to write the first sentence, it's written with complete confidence.

You mean an outline? Yeah, but it starts out pretty vague. Just bulletin points and maybe a couple of sentences to a paragraph for each section and/or chapter (depending on length). Though I expand my outline with notes and ideas as I write too, so my current project's outline went from being around 8 pages before I really started any actual writing to 27 now that I'm in the last third of the first draft.

With this project, I've also made separate word files for character notes and organizing/working out this one gimmick that recurs throughout the book. Altogether, without checking for exact numbers now, I think those files would add up to about 35-40 pages.
