So /lit/ what is your opinion of this book? I've read it numerous times and it's definitely one of my favorites.
I've read a bit of MIchael Shaara and this is his best book by far. I don't know what the /lit/ consensus is but as a History major I really enjoyed it. It's not a high level lit book but it is somewhat historical and a better read than a lot of other shit out there.
isn't this confederate apologia

Almost anything with Robert E Lee in it is going to be nice about the Confederacy and the Rebs. Besides it's a novel about war and not about the political nature of it.

It treats Buford, Hancock, Chamberlain and Reynolds fairly reverently. Meade is a bit of a non-entity and Hooker doesnt seem to have inspired much respect from the author.
Lee doesn't really come all that well. The author treats Longstreet as the wiser more prudent general and Lee is portrayed as susceptible to wishful thinking to the point of delusion.
