Honestly you don't want to be able to read Spanish. I'm a fluent Spanish-speaker and I vastly prefer reading in English to Spanish - I only used my basis in Spanish to learn French then read books in that language.

But if he want to, why not?

Not OP, but I recently moved to a mostly spanish speaking area and need to be able to communicate with my neighbors. I have a basic understanding of grammar, and reading books is a lot more interesting than memorizing vocab lists.

That's only because you are not used to read in Spanish, and instead are very comfortable reading in English. Not a bad thing in itself at all, but it doesn't prove anything other than what your comfort zone is.

Augusto Monterroso's texts are short, well-written and full of imagination. They are also very straightforward.
For vocabulary, read some of Octavio Paz's essays. Perhaps El laberinto de la soledad would be a good point to start.

Quixote is too hard. Try Cien Anos. Have a spanish dictionary on deck. Great read and you get to appreciate the writing in its original language.
