are novels written more for the layman or the academic? how important is an english degree/education to "get" joyce, delillo, pynchon, etc.?
Both.
What kind of autistic question is this? Do you think every novel ever written has the same intended audience? Kill yourself my man.

why?
joyce wrote for critics, delillo writes for the everyman, and pynchon writes for himself
>implying you'd ever understand Joyce without studying Modernist Latin Literature for your degree

Delillo is not esoteric, neither is most of Joyce's work.
Nothing much is required for Delillo. Just an interested in Americana and the mid to late 20th century.
For Joyce, knowning Irish history is often crucial to understanding him on the deepest level.
