It's mostly just interesting as an exploration of the total extreme of sexual consent and also to see the beginning of a certain kind of pornographically informed self censorship

His political musings weren't particularly deep, but they were particularly ironic, in being correct. And paralleled the later work independently done by Marx. In that he believed that both the Revolutionaries of the time, and the bourgeois, were really one in the same, with no compassion or interest in the well being of the citizen it claims to represent, and never will. Time to him was ruled by hypocritical liberal revolutionaries and profoundly loathsome aristocrats, and both should be considered enemies.
He's just trolling Catholics.

the thing is, de sade's best works were made during imprisonment. and given that he was a lusty person, one could say that he created porn for his own amusement.
but at the same time, he obviously had an ambition to be a philosopher. he had a very cynical, and almost nihilistic view on humankind, and he felt like it was his duty to write down his experiences and observations
why don't you read him and tell me :)
He is the logical conclusion of the Enlightenment. So both merit as a philosopher and pure filth.
