Does Marquis de Sade hold any merit as an author and/or philosophy, or is it just filth?
>>

He has one idea that could easily be summarized in one small paragraph that he repeats over and over.

What a horrifyingly awful cover, he does hold merit as all libertine texts do, it's about 100 pages long so read it and don't be a wuss.
Then read the quintessence of debauchery.
>>
He holds merit but it's also just filth.

It's mostly just interesting as an exploration of the total extreme of sexual consent and also to see the beginning of a certain kind of pornographically informed self censorship

Hogg is similar in that last theme

His political musings weren't particularly deep, but they were particularly ironic, in being correct. And paralleled the later work independently done by Marx. In that he believed that both the Revolutionaries of the time, and the bourgeois, were really one in the same, with no compassion or interest in the well being of the citizen it claims to represent, and never will. Time to him was ruled by hypocritical liberal revolutionaries and profoundly loathsome aristocrats, and both should be considered enemies.

He's just trolling Catholics.

>What a horrifyingly awful cover,
It's my all-time favorite cover actually.
>>
Honestly, it might have had some shock value back in the day but nowadays his books read like impossibly edgy tryhard drivel.

You're the one being edgy and try-hard if you're claiming de Sade's work doesn't, still in modern times, hold a high shock value.
Go back to /b/ and post about how gore doesn't affect you, you edgelord.

it's hard to tell whether he wanted to be one or not
>>

who says filth doesn't have merit?
>>
>>8186107
the thing is, de sade's best works were made during imprisonment. and given that he was a lusty person, one could say that he created porn for his own amusement.

but at the same time, he obviously had an ambition to be a philosopher. he had a very cynical, and almost nihilistic view on humankind, and he felt like it was his duty to write down his experiences and observations
>>
why don't you read him and tell me :)
>>
He is the logical conclusion of the Enlightenment. So both merit as a philosopher and pure filth.
>>

he is the filth of the enlightenment
