Is this book overrated? It's my friends favorite American novel. I was debating reading it
It's a tad overrated but still okay, just read it, it's short.
It's a pretty great book. Fuck how accurate the public perception of it's greatness is.
It's got nothing to do with it being popular, but I really don't like it.

It's only overrated because everyone's read it in high school, but it's still really good
Wow, I'm surprised to see /lit/ being sensible about worth and public perception
I'd second most of this. It's good, but ti tends to be the favorite book of people who don't read anything that they haven't been assigned in school.
It's one of those books that gets assigned in class, and then those who like it become the "OMG im such a reader i love the classics!!1!!" idiots despite never reading on their on volition. To Kill a Mockingbird has the same issue.

How insecure are you?

I'm not this book's biggest fan. I think the beginning is really great, and the end is really great, and everything in the middle is essentially filler.
That said, people whose literary taste I don't think is awful like this book. You might as well read it if this friend of yours is a close friend. It's a very short book, as far as novels go.

Yes, but it's still pretty good.
