I've seen coraline and read an issue of the sandman, I liked them.

My question is are his novels worth reading? He seems to be talented, but I am not a very avid reader.

His comics are better than his novels, you should probably skip them.
But he has good taste.

i tried reading that after years not reading any of his stuff. i found the prose to be dull, to say the least, and the characters uninspired. something to read to children at bedtime, i guess. i used to love reading his comics when i was younger but you grow out of Gaiman after his umpteenth reiteration of the same damn story.

American Gods and Anansi Boys are fun romps

I thought Coraline was dull and didn't like Neverwhere

I've read Neverwhere. It was like some dark drawn-out episode of Doctor Who.
