>>
>>8171320
>I don't know how you guys stand reading off of a pad.
There is barely a difference between reading a book on paper or on an e-reader.
An e-reader is lighter to carry, you can instantly translate words you don't know and you don't need bookmarkers.
>>
>>8171327
I get the benefits of an e-reader you dolt, I just mean the difference in the actual texture of the reading surface. Would you read a novel on your computer screen?
>>
>>8171332
>Would you read a novel on your computer screen?
Obviously not I'd get a headache after an hour or so.

But that comparison is stupid because an e-reader doesn't use LCD or LED displays.
They can display text without requiring any backlight which means you won't get a headache from reading on it.

If you ever tried reading on an e-reader you would notice that there is very little difference between paper and the screen of an e-reader.
>>
>>8171361
I have used my sister's e-reader, and sure it's not like reading on a phone, but there's definitely something missing when compared to a book. Like eating fast food instead of at a proper restaurant.

Her body extends into extra dimensions of space. It's very dark there because there's more volume light has to fill and it takes a long time to get anywhere. Five dimensions is even worse on that front.

On the other note, are there any good SFF themed albums like Nightfall in Middlearth and Hardworker?
Or literature in general, Leviathan was pretty dank.
>>
>>8171848
Is it easy to put pirated/downloaded e-books on there? I heard that some are locked to the store.

Also one of me m8s is selling a 4th gen Kindle for $50AUD, whereas a paperwhite is $174AUD. Is it worth getting instead? I don't think it's a touch screen.

>>8171850
Not very deep.
>>
>>8171854
>Is it easy to put pirated/downloaded e-books on there?
Yes.

The newest Paperwhite is what you want because it has 300dpi and the light. The nice thing about it is that you will pretty much never have to buy a new one ever and it pays for itself after pirating a couple of books. Though that price is a bit whack, I got mine for 99€. On amazon.com it's $120 dollars too (you just missed an event where it was reduced by 20 bucks).
>>
>>8171854
>Is it easy to put pirated/downloaded e-books on there? I heard that some are locked to the store.

If you buy a book from amazon, then it'll be locked - however there's a plugin for calibre that cac unlock them if you have the Kindle.

The Kindle itself works like a USB drive so you can put pirated books on there. Kindle's format is mobi or azw3, while most pirated books are epub. Calibre (free) can convert from epub to mobi/azw3 easily and also can be used as a library management program.

About the Paperwhite vs 4th gen - I like the light since I usually read while my wife sleeps. if you don't need the light maybe go for a 4th gen, the touchscreen of the paperwhite is a bit annoying (good for underlining, not so good for page turning, it's usually a bit awkward)
>>
>>8171854
Kindle complicates pirating.
Don't get a kindle.
Kobo is drag and drop, like with any other usb device, no extra fuss.
I got this one from the seller, cheap, best buy this year honestly. Not so much for SFF, but conservative non fic, philosophy and theology.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Kobo-Touch-eReader-905-2GB-WiFi-6-4-Colors-/281932346147?var=&hash=item41a47a3323:m:mvbO6tamIB6pf8UL1R-ZH5A
>>
>>8171863

I have this too. Served me well, I've read more than 120 books over two years and a half.

Been thinking about upgrading to Glo HD tho, that backlight and superior resolution will be a major help in getting through The Wheel of Time.
>>
>>8171540
It's a short story nigga, stop projecting. Not everyone sucks at writing.
>>
>>8171863
It barely does. Select and press on convert, done.

Don't buy that Kobo if you aren't a mega poorfag. Terrible resolution, half the DPI of any modern ereader. Don't cheap out on a one time investment you will use for 10+ years.
>>
>>8171860
>>8171861
You guys mention the light, are you referring to a backlight? Why would you want an e-reader with a backlight? I already have a tablet, I just hate reading on a screen.

>>8171863
I duno about this, the major stores here don't seem to sell any cheap Kobos and I'm dubious about buying 2nd hand, especially when I have a 4th gen Kindle on offer for $50.
>>
>>8171875
The light on an ereader is different from a screen - it doesn't shine the light onto your face, but it shines it onto the reader from above and doesn't hurt your eyes. There's probably some better explanation videos on youtube, but you 100% want this. You'll see why when you have it, you use it even during the day and it looks 'natural'.
>>
>>8171875
Like I've said, I got that one from the very same seller.
It's been quite useful, unles you care about speed of page turning or whatever, which doesn't matter really and the backlight, which normal books also don't have so it isn't really a problem.
If you can get a 4th gen kindle for 50$ well you should go with it I guess, I had to order online because they sell for like 200-300$ in stores here because fuck poor countries.
>>
>>8171878
Just watched a few, you're right, but I don't think the slightly increased DPI and backlight are worth the cost of taking the Paperwhite over the 4th gen.

>>8171889
Yeah I think you're right.
>>
>>8170591

>>

>>8171920

So much of this genre fiction is actually so silly it is really hard to get into it. Some things are outright foolish, like that new "Half a king" book by Joe Abercrombie or Shannara. The pacing indeed is awful, considering there was one novel which is almost entirely wasted on nothing.
The prose is banal and juvenile.
The plot is drawn out needlessly long with the main hook being annoying cliffhangeers made even more annoying by Arya/Sansa chapters.
If it actually does end, the ending is going to be unsatisfactory as it always is with stories which build its own hype for ages without having a clear thought out plot.
Martin is a mediocre writer who from time to time crafts a solid character, but is otherwise not very good at what he does.

>>
>>8173740
>>8173746
1) Define 'literature'
2) How about you list some of the good things about Ice and Fire? For example, how its universe, places, history, character interactions and drama are so subtle and well put into 5 1000+ pages books without even a trace of plot error or inconsistency? How GRRM's level of devotion towards it is absolutely insane and attempt of telling story this large with so many characters in ever changing world is fresh and innovative in this genre. How much work and effort it takes to tell a story that is primarily about this world at war only told through characters you think are main characters. How about its super careful and well thought out history, government, society, warfare and so many things that were subjected to historical analysis by historian and sociologists and made sense
>>
>>8173782
It's not really fresh to the genre.
The effort doesn't really mean anything as far as it being something good in the final product we can talk about. Sure, he put effort in, and it shows in many things. Does the effort make it somehow better than it actually is?
No.
As for the inconsistency, I never really went looking for it. If I did notice any I've forgotten in the meantime, been quite a while since I've read it.
The society is well done, but not something which I was particularly impressed with, it's more or less Europe with flavor and a bit of magic. It's fine for what it is, but nothing more.
>>

A Fire Upon the Deep is a generic fantasy story that people think is science fiction for some reason.

The stupid evil cloud thing = dark lord
Ancient artifact destroys it at the end
Zones of thought = magic.

There was absolutely nothing scientifically interesting about the whole story. No, the tines or whatever they are called aren't interesting.

Not that other guy, but you said that historians and sociologists studied the society, but wasn't it actually said that the towns and cities have poor planning for taking care of all the people, and even then, the societies aren't advanced or populated enough after eight fucking thousand years of written history and living with magic around?

Just curious.
>>
>>8175018
>societies aren't advanced or populated enough after eight fucking thousand
I hate this argument. This is a different world with different cultures, different political forces, and a vastly different climate. You can't just expect that the Renaissance will occur exactly the same in Westeros as it did in Europe.
>>
>>8175037
Not talking about cultural advance per se, but technological.

I mean, it took us around 4 or 5 thousand years to figure out how to use electricity as an energy source, surely something akin to that should've happened in there after double that amount of time.
>>
>>8175074
>it took us around 4 or 5 thousand years to figure out how to use electricity as an energy source, surely something akin to that should've happened in there after double that amount of time.
Humans developed agriculture at about 10,000BC. Electricity was only properly utilised in the last century or two. Throw in the fact that Westeros is a lot smaller than Earth, that it has terrible lengthy and freezing winters and cataclysmic shit like the Others and dragons and it's hardly surprising that they're still where we were perhaps six hundred years ago.
>>
>>8175094
>10,000BC
I was talking about written history, but i haven't read the books yet, so i don't know if there was anything before the First Men in there.

>Others
They've been away for at least 1000 years, if not more.

>Dragons
Tameable.

Given how they act like normal human beans most of the time, i'd figure that the struggle for survival would've helped them develop faster in harsh environments due to their extreme needs.

Which then begs the question of how do they get their food in their long winters.

Then again, i'm questioning a work of fiction, so it's not like i'll get anywhere.
>>
Can you recommend some sci-fi that is more speculative about humanity and uses science fiction as a vessel for that? Stuff like The Dispossessed, but not Le Guin as I've read plenty of her work and know there's more if I want it.

So, I finished Dune.

All around a pretty underwhelming experience and I honestly don't get the extreme amounts of praise for it. It had some cool moments, but those cool moments weren't really worth about 500 pages of slogging through.

+ Paul is an entertaining character, especially towards the end
+ Fairly interesting setting
+ The dialogue and character interactions were decently well written

- Badly paced, builds up for an extremely long time just to resolve the conflict in a dozen pages
- Boring, uninspired prose
- Undeveloped, uninspired characters aside from Paul/Jessica
- Minimal sandworm action, which drew me to the book in the first place

Final score: 2/5

Not him but the Transformers movies are shit tier. Fuck Hollywood for producing massproduced crap that the market will mass eat up.

The Transformer's anime trilogy was one of my first proper exposures to scifi and included some serious Ship of Theseus philosophising and had some extremely memorable, unique and tragic characters like Alpha Q who lose everything dear to them in the cruellest way imaginable (an alien survivor rendered into a fivefold schizophrenic by despair trying to recreate its homeworld from the inside of the planet eater responsible for its destruction while existing in a parasitic relationship with the aforementioned). There was also plenty of interesting commentary on bioengineering, political commentary, the complexity of memory underlying an individual's allegiance both moral and ethical and nuanced questioning as to whether individuals can truly change.

And Hollywood turned it into fancy CGI memeshit where the Decepticons 9/11 Antarctica and human romance. It truly boggles the bind. This shouldn't be how the series is remembered.

This is the problem with reading classic literature from 50+ years ago - by today's standards it's dull and hackneyed, but at the time its masterful.

>>8176119

For God's Sake!

>>8176119
No, Dune was always like that and literature doesn't seem bad by standards of today because the standards are always the same.
Dune didn't age well because it lacks some crucial elements of classics in general, meaning it wasn't as good to begin with, although it had some science fiction novelty to it.
>>8176122
All classics hold up to a certain degree, Dune does as a science fiction epic, but not as a study of character psychology, life wisdom or other elements say Dostoevsky or Joyce have.

I agree that Dune is flawed, but nevertheless it is an interesting work to consider. It is absolutely sprawling with thematic content about technology, religion, and ecology. Indeed it is difficult to figure out exactly what Herbert is doing. It feels like he was struggling to rein in a story that had taken on a life of its own, compelled by its big ideas to some 800 pages or whatever it is - too long.

Contrast this with Arthur C Clarke who can write about so much within 300 pages. Although Herbert is more concerned with characterisation; whether this is to his credit, I cannot say.

>>

It's purely in your mind. That is not to say you're wrong. Physical books bring with them touch, volume, smell, and other senses into the reading. The way you hold them is different, the way you turn the page is different.

These things add up, and give your brain a different feeling when reading a physical book vs ereader.

Unfortunately, 60% of my library is digital due to the convenience.
>>
>>8174850
I'm actually reading it today for the first time. About 40% in.

The prose is ok. The characters are similarly "flat" to those in Foundation. I attribute this to both series telling the story of the world, rather than the story of the characters. The themes, lore, and underlying messages of the book is whats drawing me forward.
