They usually aren't, and that is the problem. We cannot tell what was in the book since it's lost forever, but many of the books that propose somewhat similar views, do it in a way that lacks of any personal matter and that is the reason why if affects some people.
We can't know if Hegesias' book was written eloquently or not, but antinatalist books are 'pessimistic' books, and they are hardly eloquent in any way.

Like you said yourself, his work is lost and we can never know for sure. But in my experience with similar philosophers, the thing about them is that they're very good at deceitfully abstracting ideas. I say deceitfully because, when you take a closer look at what they're advocating, you realize most of what they're saying stems from unpleasant personal experiences, even if it isn't described as personal or intimate in their texts. And yes, I realize this is the method of practically any philosopher ever, but most aren't advocating absolute annihilation - or the most decisive and irreversible relative annihilation). Another difference between Hegesias and, let's say Nietzsche or Camus, is that the latter had the will and/or the means to overcome their existential doubts and came back (or at least tried to come back) stronger from their inquiries. Maybe it all sounds too subjective to you and it probably is. Basically, Hegesias' advice doesn't feel right to me. At the end of the day it IS a matter of personal preference. But I suggest people give other more optimistic pessimists a chance before resorting to such extremes.
And I tried to be as specific as possible with everything except that one sentence which you say is a generalization. It is one, but it is a rightful one. I do believe that in the vast majority of the cases (a majority vast enough to warrant such "ruthless generalization"), one or more of life's episodes are causal to the person's outlook on life and philosophy. May not be breaking up with a gf or someone dying, but I do believe there is always a trigger. Sometimes it's a chemical trigger, sometimes it's an experience, but if you had access to all the relevant information, I guarantee you the cause(s) could be pinpointed.
