A person I generally trust on their taste for books, described this as follows:
"The dialogue is pretty much the most offensive garbage I've ever come across in a full-length novel. The characters are constantly quipping and bickering like 16-year-olds in a webcomic written by a 14-year old for 12-year olds. Everything is edgy, everybody is "such a dick" and everybody always has the "perfect" politically correct, yet "witty" reply, which must have been really funny for Weir, but much less so for the reader."
It made me not want to read the book even though I kind of enjoyed the movie.

I don't understand why people expect sci fi books to make some large statement about the world. The Martian is a fun read that doesn't really have any substance to it just like 99% of all sci fi/fantasy
