The Hugos never expected to be politicized so basically the voting mechanism is a joke, not at all intended for serious "democratic process." They only work if they're patronized by well-meaning hobbyists who don't take it super seriously. Anyone who really, seriously wants to defraud a fucking scifi short story award vote could do it pretty easily with the Hugos.

So they did. SJWs got into it, like they do with everything. They complained that scifi culture, and the typical fare of the awards, is pretty man-o-centric or whatever the fucking whiny clitoris jargon is nowadays. So they did that thing where they whine until they get a faggy rigged "Everyone's a Winner" outcome, and everyone politely claps like "we're so progressive for letting this transparent orchestration take place, transparent orchestrations are important to progress, feminism is important, you go girl! Womyn strong!"

So, pretty understandably, people with less instinctive inclination for polite-clapping progressive circlejerks got annoyed by this. Among them, the guys who were REALLY annoyed by PC culture rose to the top and galvanized the sentiment into a small movement, and used it to rig the awards in the opposite direction.

The real underlying issue is, as usual, "chicks ruin everything they touch because they turn it into a fucking gay feelings festival." It is mostly manifesting as nerds confusedly lashing out, mostly unproductively, and the progressives going "hey, no, you gotta clap, it's progressive and stuff."
