One of my favorites. Last Evenings on Earth is my favorite short story collection of all time. Loved 2666 and The Savage Detectives. Beach is one of my favorite short stories. Thought that The Insufferable Gaucho was the weakest of everything I've read by him, though it was still pretty good. Police Rat was outright bad although it's interesting as a precursor to 2666, especially the part about he crimes.
I would agree that overall he isn't the most cerebral author out there but I really love his style and the structure he uses in his work. All very cool, and most of it works very well.

you seem well read in the Bolañoverse. I read 2666 and then moved no to Skating Rink. Loved them both and I'll be starting Literatura Nazi next. where to go from that?

YES ANOTHER BOLANOBRO

I've yet to read Insufferable but am considering ordering it. Did you enjoy The Return?
>>
>>8141059
Agreed with other anon - savage detectives is a must. Nazi Literauree is a very unique Bolano read. Distant Star is a sort of extension and much more traditional.
Having said all that - go for Savage Detectives. It's fantastic.

The Return is great, very... Visceral. Overall mostly love or list stories, a lot of them are rather heavy. One of them, Prefiguration of Lalo Cura, is one of the most violent stories I've read.
